Hi Ladies,
DH and I are planning our very first trip to the Oregon Coast in 3 weeks. It's a special occasion -- DH is turning 30!!! We are planning on 3 nights. We have a gift certificate for a free night's stay at the Elizabeth Inn in Newport. So I figured we'll drive down to Newport and start our trip there. We want to end up in Cannon Beach on the 3rd night. My question is -- where should we stay the 2nd night? We want something approximately halfway between Newport & Cannon Beach.
So far I've just looked at a map, and it appears Lincoln City could be an option, but I read a review on TripAdvisor that said "there's nothing going on in Lincoln City". Well...we're not exactly looking to go out and party at night or anything like that, but I do want to go somewhere that has a decent restaurant to eat at for dinner. Any suggestions? I've heard some of you mention before that you like Manzanita, but that seems awfully close to Cannon Beach and I'm looking for something a little further south.
Thanks in advance!!!
Re: Trip to the Coast -- Recommendations Please!
My husband and I really like Depot Bay, just south of Lincoln City (I think). It's a teenie-tiny little town, but the view is beautiful. It has a steep rocky coastline instead of an actual beach, and I think it's a nice contrast to Cannon Beach (our favorite place on the coast). It's also a great place to whale watch (depending on the season, I don't remember when they are migrating) - we saw one right from our balcony once!
If you do stay in Depot Bay, Gracie's Sea Hag has really good clam chowder, but it's not exactly a classy place. If you're looking for a nicer restaurant there is one on the most-north part of town on the left hand side of the road if you are driving north. I don't remember the name, but there aren't a lot of restaurants in town, so you probably won't miss it. It is right on a cliff and has an entire wall of windows so you can enjoy a fresh seafood dinner while watching the sunset over the ocean.
Just my two-cents. Have a great time!

We love Lincoln City. It's the beach I grew up going to. When we go, we rent through Horizon Rentals instead of staying in a hotel, so I can't help you with a regular hotel but I can tell you that we love this property in Lincoln City - http://horizonrentals.com/vacation-rentals/1002/key-west/ Looking at it, though, it looks like there may be minimum stay of 2 nights.
No town on the Oregon coast really has a ton goin' on. Seaside is the most touristy, and Newport has the aquarium. Cannon Beach is a bit more upscale and has lots of little shops, but none of the towns have (to my knowledge) clubs or anything like that.
I also love Tillamook, but that might just be cause I have friends that live there. It's a fun, quaint little town (like most of the coastal towns). Since we always visit friends there, I'm not sure what all there is to do, but the cheese factory is always fun and Blue Heron Cheese is also located there and they have great food. If you do go to Blue Heron, have lunch there and then buy some truffles - you won't regret it, omg, so good!
Lincoln City is only about 40 minutes from Newport, and Manzanita's only about 20 minutes from Cannon Beach. Really, Tillamook's the one right in the middle.
We are huge fans of the Ocean Terrace Condos in Lincoln City. We like unit # 22 and we get the Glass Float Package where you get three nights, plus you get to make a glass float at a glass gallery for under $400 (off season). They also have a Two at the Terrace package that we have got before where you stay two nights and get dinner ($50 gift cert) to Black Fish Cafe in the city for under $300 (off season). HTH!
Thank you all so very much or your help! I love cheese too so Tillamook would be fun! And I looked up Depoe Bay & it looks gorgeous! Thanks also for your recommendations on vacation rentals (rather than a hotel) -- I've done some investigating and discovered that hotels aren't so cheap on the Coast! And no, I'm definitely not looking to go clubbing or anything like that! LOL! I can't even remember the last time hubby and I did that -- we must be getting old. :-) We're just looking for a nice, relaxing and romatic weekend. Thanks again for all of your suggestions! Portland Nesties are the best!!!
I'm not a fan of Lincoln City in general, but we stayed at the Starfish Manor in Lincoln City once and liked it pretty well (http://www.onthebeachfront.com/). We usually stay in Cannon Beach or Seaside.
You might look at places around Otter Rock if you want something more central between Newport and Cannon Beach.
