My husband and I went apartment hunting today and found a great and affordable building around 80th and 2nd.
Currently we live in NJ in a rented house, but we both want to take advantage of a city lifestyle before we purchase a home/have kids. He works in midtown, and I would be driving to Rockland County.
Any tips or recommendations for moving? Anything from the logistics to moving, to good delivery groceries, laundry services, PARKING is huge:) Really any feedback on city living would be awesome, neither of us has ever done it.
TIA:)
Re: upper east side?
Welcome fellow 315!!
I know of a few good restaurants in that area, but not much in terms of day-to-day living.
Woohoo, 315 has to make it's rounds, right?
You don't know of any dog day care/boarding or groomers in the UES either do you?
all my friends who live on the UES use freshdirect for their groceries.
there is a GREAT wine shop on lexington near 87th street called best cellars. they have their wines organized according to flavor and intensity, and it's a very user-friendly place with great prices. http://www.bestcellars.com/
wine, of course, is very important when one is moving and living amidst unpacked boxes!

I live in washington heights and shop at key food but for big orders I use Fresh Direct. Usually good products, fast delivery. Not too expensive
When I lived on the UES I generally just bought groceries frequently, getting what I wanted for that day and the next. But, I also used Fresh Direct on occasion.
There are several GREAT grocery stores in the neighborhood. I went to Citarella most frequently, sometimes Agata and Valentina, sometimes Grace's Marketplace, occasionally whole foods. I generally avoided Gristedes.
Generally every block has a dry cleaner/laundry service. You may need to walk a little if you want to do your own laundry if your building doesn't have facilities for it. Personally to me it was worth the expense to have it done by the drycleaner/laundry.
All of the garages in the neighborhood will be comparable in price, once you confirm this for yourself, you will likely go with the most convenient one. We parked our car in Long island city (the City Lights building) and then took the subway to get it. NOT so convenient, but over $100/month cheaper and only two subway stops. You could also go the park on the street route, but expect to dedicate a significant part of your day to parking spot hunting.
There are a bazillion great restaurants. YOu'll have a great time exploring the neighborhood for yourself to find your favorites.
Congratulations and have fun!
I love the city. I love shopping at Whole Foods. It is reasonably priced - Food Emporium is way overpriced. Whole Foods also delivers, for $8 or orders over $200 is free delivery. Fresh Direct is another good one.
Look for a parking garage close by. I live in a building that has my garage below my building.
Good luck and have fun!
