Do you drink it/buy it?

What's your favorite brand and grape?

Re: Boxed Wine

  • I've bought the Fish Eye boxed wine in the past, i've really liked it.

  • When I met my boyfriend a year ago, I would have snubbed my nose at boxed wine. But in the year we've been together, I've become (like him) a connoisseur of boxed wine.

The best boxed wine, in my opinion, is Black Box. For white, the Sauvignon Blanc cannot be beat. For red, though, we usually go with Bota Box and the Old Vine Zin. We've recently discovered Big House. They have a California White Wine blend that is beautiful.

Generally when we have a dinner party or some kind of special meal, I buy a bottle of wine. But for weekly general wine or friends popping over for pizza, etc. the box is perfect. It doesn't go bad quickly, so you don't waste as much, and it's convenient and yummy.

  • I've come to decide that not all boxed wine is created equal.  If you shop at a reputable wine shop (Surdyks, Solo Vino, even Haskells) you'll likely find a decent boxed wine.  If you shop at a run of the mill liquor store, you're not likely to find something good.  Black box was reasonable and tasty but I think that they know it now and the price has gone up proportionately.  I just had some this week from Cirus (I think - red and black box with a grecian looking guy on the label) that was good.  I think it was Portuguese and came out to about $5 a bottle if you would have bought them separate.  The bonus for boxed wine is that the bladder shrinks down as you use it so there isn't any air exposure inside and the wine lasts a long time.  It makes for easy serving if you don't want to sit and open bottle after bottle when entertaining.  No risk of getting a "corked" bottle either.  If I was having a fancy party, I wouldn't buy it and would buy regular bottles.  If I wanted to keep something around for every day purposes, I'd go for the good boxes.  (not Franzia or whatever that is)
  • I really like Tisdale wine, it's normally around $3/bottle.  I drink red wine and all the kinds I've had have been good.  I like a nice cheap wine for those night when you just need a glass or 2.

  • Oh what I would give for a glass of boxed wine right now, being pregnant! I agree with the black box suggestion, I always drank their cabernet. Only bad part is, you basically have wine on tap and it's easy to drink every night.

  • I really have liked Black Box.  It's a good wine for a pretty good price.

I agree with mplsbride though - it's dangerous to have in your fridge because it's easy to always have a glass!

  • We also drink the Black Box Cab as our "daily" wine during the week.  We drink bottles of wine on the weekends, or when we're having people over, or when we're attending parties/dinners, etc.

We like the Black Box well enough to keep on hand--good thing too, because we already spend too much money on wine :)   It's nice, because you can have a glass without opening a bottle and feeling like you need to finish it.  But, like PP said, it's dangerous, because it's so easy to have a second glass, or a third...

I'm fairly certain that Black Box (and my obvious lack of will power) are partially to blame for my recent weight gain!

  • Wow - I was totally thinking we were some of the few people who liked boxed wine! Black Box is also our fav. We usually go for the Cabernet or Merlot. Black Box is also one of the few good boxed wines at our tiny local store. At larger wine shops, they have more selection, and we have tried a few other brands that we like (I can't remember them now - sorry that's not helpful!) Basically, I don't feel afraid to try most boxed wines as long as I don't get the ultra-cheap stuff.

I don't think I've ever had a sweet white boxed, probably just because a bottle of sweet white is pretty easy to drink in one sittingEmbarrassed

EDIT - I totally agree with PPs that if I am having a fancy party or bringing wine somewhere I still get bottles. Boxed wine is just a nice convenience that keeps longer (and can be dangerous I suppose!)
