Re: what do you guys think?

  • Here's my two cents, if it helps:

I think having the opportunity to teach or coach your coworkers is one of the most powerful relationship-building opportunities you can get in the workplace, and it's an important way of gaining credibility too. If you want to stay and advance within this organization, then I think meeting with the VP is a fantastic opportunity. Rather than just giving her notes, you might want to see if you can put together a high-level executive summary of the content then schedule a meeting (or better yet a lunch) where you can tell her about it in person.

Now, of course, I wouldn't expect anything to happen overnight, but advancing in a company is totally a game of inches. Every interaction you have with management has the potential to build your reputation with them. And even if the promotions and raises and obvious stuff like that doesn't come overnight, building credibility with management helps you get your projects done faster and better and with less hurdles during the approval process ... and of course being successful in your job makes you a better candidate for advancement.

Now, on the other hand, it sounds like you're not super happy with your employer. It seems like you don't have a great deal of trust in your supervisors or their desire to develop you as a professional. If that's really how things are then maybe this isn't the place you want to put your heart and soul into advancing at? Unfortunately, only you can make that determination.

Sorry for writing a novel. I hope this is at least a little helpful. If you choose to go for it, I hope you WOW the VP.  :-)

  • Well put, Diana. I also agree with the poster that wrote a novel on the original post (KathyGee).

I think you are overdramatizing this a bit. But I think you're doing so because you're unhappy. It sounds like your company does not value education as much as you do. Please try to make the best of your job until you can find a place you will be happier. Until then, share the info and impress/help as many people as you can. You're not giving up yourself or your knowledge... you are gaining respect.
