New Nestie! + Name Change Question

Hey ladies,

It's weird to log in and get taken straight to the nest! I still need to post my vendor reviews on the knot community...

Anyway, I'm changing my name, and I know I need to go to SS office first, then DMV to change my license and registration. But after that, do I just call my credit cards and make changes, or can I do that online? Is there anything I'm forgetting?

Thanks!

Anniversary

Re: New Nestie! + Name Change Question

  • i sent my credit cards a form letter, i couldn't really find anywhere online for it. Basically I said, my name is Lauren, formerly Smith, I got married (see attached copy of certificate) and would like the name on my account to reflect my married name, Jones. Here are the accounts it will be affecting: #1234567. Signed, Lauren Jones.

Also make sure to check with your bank, your employer, and your insurances. It took my job over 6 months to change my name on my insurance.

  • Hello, congrats, and welcome to The Nest.  This board is very slow.  I just joined this board a few weeks ago.  Hopefully it will start picking up with more people joining it.

    As for name change:

I called my credit card company and did it over the phone with a customer service rep with no problems.

I went to the bank with my marriage certificate to change the name on my account there.

Student loans will need a copy of the marriage lisence.  Not sure if a photocopied one works.

Passport name change you will need to mail in a certified copy of the marriage lisence, current passport, and I think a certified birth certificate.  You will get all of them back.

  • I called my CCs to change my name and most had a formal form that I had to fill out and I had to provide a copy of my marriage certificate which I just faxed in.  Don't forget to change your student loans if you have any...I forgot to do this for quite awhile!

I went to the DMV in Hartford mid-morning and had no wait and no issues getting it changed, but I've heard that depends on which location you go to.

  • Actually sometimes it speeds up the process if you go to DMV first then SS.  I did that and the SS woman was so happy so see me have an ID in my new name.  I also it my banks the same day, and did the name change in person which only took a few minutes.

Other places to think about: job; school (if you're presently in college/grad school/etc); former schools (transcripts/alumni assoc.); professional or recreational associations; health/life/home/auto/etc insurance; online profiles/shopping clubs; cell phone/cable/utilities/etc bills; doctors' offices; lawyers' offices; accountant offices; stocks/bonds; loans; resume.

I got the bridal name change kit from the knot shop and I've been steadily working my way through it.  It provides a checklist of places and also form letters to fill out and send in.
