RP: Will this yard take a lot of time to maintain?

Reposted from Decorating & Renovating...

We are considering putting in an offer on a house with an awesome backyard and an inground pool but I'm getting a little intimidated that it's all going to be a lot of work.  I do enjoy yardwork and think most of what's there is not going to require an over abundance of time except maybe in the fall when it all has to be trimmed down but I've never had a pool before and don't know how long it takes to maintain.

Here's a picture of the backyard - the pool is just behind that tree in the middle of the picture.  There are a few other sections with similar landscaping.  Do you think this will take a lot of time to maintain?

Re: RP: Will this yard take a lot of time to maintain?

  • I would say yes but if you're up for it it's gorgeous!  Looks like lots of nice established perennials.  The grasses should be cut back in the fall...can't really tell what else is there specifically.  You could have a yard crew come do it the first time and watch and learn!

My parents have a pool and its the most work in the spring & fall when you open & close it.  If you invest in one of those vacuum robots that saves time in weekly vacuuming.

  • The beds will need weeding. You need to stay on top of it, because of how fast weeds sprout. That's the main thing.

After that, it's turf maintenance: water, mowing, and chemical applications.

Pools are not much work, IMO.

Why don't you invite me over for a week? I could teach you... show you what needs to be done?

  • OMG. I'd LOVE to have that yard. OMG. It's just beautiful. I could imagine myself lounging next to the pool with a book in hand. And spending my spring working in the yard, maybe adding my lilies here and there.

Ditto NB - you'll need to stay on top of weeding and lawn maintenance and trimming the ornamental grass, but seriously, that's a gorgeous established yard and I'd be all over it.

Thanks!  I really appreciate your expertise!  And if we do buy it, I just may have to take you up on your offer!!!

  • I don't think it will be THAT much work, personally.

Yes, you'll have to keep up with mowing the lawn, but the planting beds look pretty dense (and well-maintained so it's not like you'll have to rip out a bunch of stuff & redo unless you really want to) so I don't think that you'll have massive weeding needs if you apply a good layer of mulch every year or so.

I've never maintained a pool, so I can't comment on that.

If the house is as lovely as the yard, I'd buy it.

  • It?s a beautiful house and from the looks of it will take up quite a bit of your time and energy. You might need to hire someone once a week to maintain it, and if you can, that would be perfect for you.
