Has anyone tried composting pet waste?

I am new to this board, but I think you will be the best group to answer my question.  I am looking for a green way to handle my dog's waste, and found dog poo composters like this:

http://www.composterconnection.com/site/poop-converter.html

have any of you tried this?  Does it work?  Can you put compostable bags in there as well  (I take my dog on a lot of walks so need something to carry it back to the bin in).  Can I use the same red worms that I currently have in my vegetable compost and just start them in the other bin?

thanks for your help!

Re: Has anyone tried composting pet waste?

  • We used a pet waste company that collected our compostable litter and then composted the waste for us... I know, it sounds a bit lazy... but what they told me was composting cat/dog waste is easy but the key is to get it hot enough if you want to use it on an edible garden. I don't remember the details of how hot, etc, but you shouldn't need a special composter. Just stir and if you're worried about the safety just use it on flowers and such, not veggies :) I'm sure you could use the same worms, but you definitely don't need to do a worm compost to deal with the waste. And the bags should work fine in the compost :)
