Possibly moving to Allentown

Hi ladies!

My husband and I (along with our son) will be flying to Allentown next week for the second round of a job interview process for my husband. We are from Alaska, so if he gets this job it will be a HUGE change for us. I have a few questions for anyone that knows about that area.

So here are my questions:

Is Allentown a good area to raise a family?

What are the winters like? (We are used to long winters, so sorter ones will be nice!) More specifically does the area get snow that stays for a couple of months, or does it snow and then melt within a few days and warm back up?

Is the school district good? (Our son is only 16 months, but we will be living there for the next 5-10 years at least and want to make sure that it is a good one for when he reaches the age, plus we plan on having more kids)

Anything else you can tell me about the area would be fantastic!

Thanks - Samantha

Re: Possibly moving to Allentown

  • Its been a long time since I've lived there but from what I remember the actual Allentown School District itself is not one of the best around.

Here's a website with some of the local elementary school rankings:

As far as the winters, it depends. Most of the time it doesn't get really snowy until January or February and into March lately. Normally the snow sticks around a couple of days but things are passable within a day or so.

    Good luck!

  • Good luck!  My DH is from around this area.  I agree, Allentown School District is not the greatest, but there are really nice areas nearby.  The Lehigh Valley is a great location, there are lots of towns and a bunch of good school districts that are close access to Allentown.  If you move this way, I would recommend the Center Valley/Coopersburg area (Southern Lehigh SD), Bethlehem/Hellertown (Saucon Valley SD), and Parkland SD.  You have a lot of great options!
