Yay! Getting a new freezer

We bought a 5 cubic ft. chest freezer last fall to hold local meat and produce.  We've been doing so much freezing that it's almost full!  DH is starting hunting and fishing this fall for the first time, in an effort to eat meat more self-sustainably and limit the amount of people in our food chain.  So we need a bigger freezer.  Luckily enough, when one of our neighbors was helping me carry my Farmer's Market cooler into the house awhile back, he mentioned that they were thinking about getting a chest freezer.  I talked to him yesterday, and he's buying ours! Yes  We can install the new freezer at our leisure, move everything over, and take our current freezer 3 doors down!

Re: Yay! Getting a new freezer

  • Well that worked out nicely!!

I think I have a 14.8 cu foot one, and I need another! The dogs pretty much take up all my freezer room. Well, their stuff, not the actual dogs of course.

  • We're buying a 13 cu ft stand-up one.  That's the biggest one we can fit in the kitchen of our townhouse.  It's already going to look pretty odd considering it's bigger than the fridge but oh well!

  • Yeah I don't know where I'd put another one! There's a perfect little room off my laundry room that is just perfect for a chest freezer. I really have no idea what its for. If I didn't have that room I have no idea where I'd put it!

Just a thought with the standing freezers... You might want to use the little key to lock the door. I've seen quite a few standing freezer doors pop open a tiny bit if the seal isn't just right or if there's too much weight on the door.

Just a thought for you. I don't want all your food to get ruined.

Good to know, thanks!  If we lost our food I would Crying  Crying  Crying  Crying

ETA:  Apparently my brillant DH already considered this.  I IM'ed him to tell him about what you said, and he wrote "the freezer we're looking has adjustable feet.  The instructions for assembly say to angle it slightly backwards so the door will "close by itself" from being open 45 degrees."

Ah, perfect! Have fun filling it up.

  • I'm in the same boat as Alisha.  I have a small chest freezer that holds about 3 weeks of frozen meat for the dogs.  We need to upgrade, so I've been casually checking Craigslist.  I can't wait to have a bigger freezer.
