Anyone know what this is?

share.shutterfly.com/action/welcome?sid=8CbtmbZw5aMxc

I saw this plant (or weed - not sure) growing among my dying ground covering.  At first I just thought it was a weed but than I looked close and it has these purple/black berry type things growing from it.  I took a picture of those and the green ones that haven't turned colors yet.  Anyone know what this is.  SHould I just pull it or will it grow into something decent?

  • PULL IT.

  • Ok thanks - it will get pulled this weekend :)
  • That is nightshade. It's in the same family as eggplant, potato, tomato and chile pepper.  Unfortunately nightshade and bitter nightshade spread like mad, can pass diseases on to related plants, and the enire plant is toxic. If you have children you'll want to pull it as often and as fast as you can because the berries look delicious, but will cause a tummy ache.  Don't compost it (throw in the actual trash) and wash your hands after you pull it.

  • Yes, it's called Nightshade. I certainly pull it without gloves or handwashing.

While it is toxic, it isn't dangerous to handle by any means. It is sometimes used medicinally. People eat it. I just think it's hideously ugly. That is about the last thing I would want to seed out in my garden.
