Need advice from former WV Brides
Hey all, I'm trying to plan my wedding in WV from Seattle and am having some trouble coming up with good venues. I've been looking at the Stonewall Resort near Weston and the Lakeview Resort near Morgantown. Lakeview looks amazing but the customer reviews online say it's really old and run-down. I know that the Stonewall is newer, but they want to charge me an arm and a leg.
Has anyone had their/been to weddings at either of these places? Any input would be helpful.
Thanks!
Re: Need advice from former WV Brides
I have been to Stonewall and Lakeview but not for weddings. Let me give you background on each. Lakeview is outside of Morgantown (WVU) it is a little outdates but known for its golfing. You will be a way from WVU but that twon is still pretty wild. Stonewall-I thought was very nice it is a fairly new property, nice pool, good golfing, there is a spa on site.
Have you looked into Oglebay Resort in WHeeling, WV? It is about 1 hour outside of Pittsburgh. Very nice/family friendly. I have been to a few weddings there both indoor and outdoor weddings. It is along the lines of Stonewall, I am not sure what they are quoting you but they offer many diffrent ranges depending on size and particular venue.
Please let me know if you have anymore questions I can ask around
Hey. I saw your post on the Knot, but figured I'd respond here instead. I'm the girl another poster mentioned that used to work for Stonewall. I don't frequent the Knot or the WV nest board very much any more since I moved to NC. That is a better place to page me if you have a specific question.
Anyways... the skinny on your wedding at Stonewall...
Like I said, I worked for Stonewall. My DH (then FI) did as well. We had our wedding there a few years ago.
Because we were both employes we got discounts on things. The full retail price they charge for food/venue fee, etc... is not worth it anymore. When I had my wedding the food was fantastic, however that was a while ago. Different people were in charge, and since we were employees and knew the chef personally we were able to tweak the menu how we wanted. DH ended up thinking up a custom menu, described it to the chef and the guy created it. It was great! But like I said, different people are there now.
I worked at Stonewall until this summer and I can tell you the food quality has plummeted severly. They are very picky about the food as well. You can NOT bring in any outside food or beverage. Meaning all food, ordurves, your cake, your alcohol, everything must be through them, and ordurves and alcohol are NOT cheap from them.
Stonewall is a very beautiful setting. That is why I chose to have my wedding there. But it is pricey. Ask for discounts and negotiate EVERYTHING. They are hurting bad for business right now and their employees are quitting left and right. (Me being one of them.) so use that to your advantage and negotiate prices for everything. If you have specific questions just ask, and I will answer them the best I can.
I suggest that you work with a wedding planner. They have the scoop on all the venues. You can hire them only to take care of finding you the venue that you want. They know all of the questions to ask. They can go there and take photos for you. In addition, they always have preferred vendors that they use. The vendors typically have worked many venues and know the scoop on them. I know that when I worked with my planner she went to many venues with and for me until I found the one that fit me and my style. Just a suggestion. Good luck!
