Friendship is a two way street!

I'm going to vent here...

I have this "friend" that is driving me batty. We've been friends since 1st grade, we only live a quarter of a mile from each other growing up so we were pretty much inseparable. She has always been selfish, so I don't know why anything she does surprises me now. She was my MOH for my wedding and even left half way through my reception without even saying goodbye. The kicker, she was in charge of taking off the chair covers for me. She actually offered to do this, so at last minute I had to go around and find someone else to do it for me once the reception was over. That is just one example of the types of things she does. She does things like this often.

Well, she is pregnant with a girl and is due any time. To preface this, DS1's name would have been Eliana Harper had he been a girl. My friend knows this and knows how much I love the name Harper. Anyway, I have knows all along that she plans on naming her girl Eliana Elizabeth. Fine, DH and I weren't really sold on Eliana if we had planned on having anymore kids. Harper would definitely be our girl's name if we ever have one. She tells me today that she's thinking of changing her daughter's middle name, then tells me "Eliana Harper"! Angry  Granted, she knows that DH and I are done having kids, God willing. Am I overreacting? I told her that if she used the name Harper that I'd never speak to hear again.

Maybe she was joking, but seriously... she knows how badly I want a girl, but won't be having one. I just feel like even saying that was a bit of a slap in the face.

I'm sorry this was so long, I just had to get it out. I want to go slap her!

  • I would be a little annoyed. One reason that we arent sharing any future/favorite names with anyone. That way if someone uses 'our' name, it would nessasarily be a slap in the face.

  • I don't know.  i never really understood the whole stealing of a name thing.  Especially a middle name. Maybe its because our families are so big, names are bound to overlap.  My SIl told me she liked the name Elizabeth which is our girls name, if we have a girl.  I told her I don't own the name so if she wanted to use it too (for her non existent girl), it wouldn't bother me, but not to be mad because we'll use it too.

If she knew you were done having kids, I doubt she was trying to be malicious.  But if she is serious about using the name, it would have been more considerate for her to talk to you about it first, especially if she knew how much you wanted a girl.

If it was just the name thing, I'd say your overreacting, but it sounds like with the history that you have with this girl, this is just the icing on the cake.

  • Maybe I am overreacting. It's just that Eliana Harper isn't a exactly a popular type name. I don't know, it's just that she's that type of person to do things to piss people off. Eh, I don't know... It's just really annoying. haha

I agree with this completely.  I think she should have come to you with it first to sort of feel you out on the idea.  That would be something a good friend would do, especially when it's not a popular name to begin with.  Like Chach said, it sounds like you have a bit of a past with this girl and this just tops it all off.

I totally agree. If you had picked out a more common name I probably wouldn't have given it a second thought if she decided to use it but since it is so unique I would take it a bit more personal.
