How does the swastika make you feel? Not the Nazi flag but the symbol itself.
I'm watching Dr. Phil about white supremacy so of course the symbol is being discussed. It reminded me of a discussion that a friend and I had at the Holocaust Museum. She was horrified by the symbol and actually had chills but it had little to no effect on me.
In the Hindu religion, the swastika is widely used. My MIL even carries a pill box that has the symbol beaded on the top (DH HATES it when she takes it out in public.) So in my mind the swastika has become a religious symbol and not a symbol of hate.
I hate the Nazi flag and that a symbol meaning "any lucky or auspicious object" has been twisted to elicit fear and hatred.
Re: Wake up!! A topic for discussion.
I am aware of the Hindu imagery of the symbol and I know that the original Aryans were peaceful and loving. I also work for a Jewish agency so I have sympathy for what the culture has endured.
However, when I see the symbol itself, I do tend to be taken to a recollection of the Holocaust as opposed to seeing it as a peacful religious symbol. Maybe it's because I work closely with the last few Holocaust survivors in our area and I've heard their stories, watched their eyes glaze as they discuss events of that time, and I've seen their tattoos.
The swastika is not routinely displayed as a peaceful symbol and since WWII it has been portrayed as a Nazi regime symbol. Unfortunately, that's what has been ingrained in me as well. I can intellectually stop myself and say, no, that's not what it's really about. But my first instinct and reaction is that of horror.
