MIL WTH

So maybe its not quite a vent but sort of a what the heck was she thinking.

Last weekend we went to Ottawa to visit DH's family, including some from out of town.  While we were there, MIL told everyone that my BIL had bought a ring for his girlfriend and that he is going to propose in a couple of weeks.  WTH?

First off, what if she says no?

Second, maybe it was news he wanted to tell the family after it happened.  I felt it was very inappropriate for her to steal his thunder.  Especially to tell the whole extended family, not just the immediate family.

It really reminds me to be careful what we tell her.  No secrets to her coming from this household anytime soon.  And I think BIL will be pissed if he finds out that she told everyone.

Re: MIL WTH

  • I'm sure she's just excited, but it definitely is not her news to share. Does your BIL know that she did the announcement to everyone?
  • No, I am not saying a word.

  • Nope, not her news to share (unless perhaps he told her she could). Reminds me of the time my MIL emailed the entire family about the birth of DD, only moments after hearing it from us for the first time. Yeah, I was heartbroken that she stole our baby news thunder.

  • Ugh - definitely not her news to share.

I remember being angry at my grandmother for telling my whole family that I got engaged - I was planning on telling everyone at a family gathering that was a few days after I got engaged - when I got to the gathering, everyone already knew.

  • Wowzers. That blows for him.

Unfortunately we learnt our lesson in the past. If someone hears something first we ask them to keep quiet in telling others until we can do it personally.
