iPad vs netbook

My Laptop is ancient and I am looking to replace it with something more like a netbook or a iPad.  The the types of things I would be using it for would be surfing the net, posting to my blog, and working some with shuttterfly studio.  Do you Ladies have any suggestions?

Re: iPad vs netbook

  • I've never used an iPad but with any technology I like to wait to see them work out any kinks before getting something (ie Windows Vista vs. XP)

I'd get a cheaper netbook and wait and see how the iPad improves.  Even if there's nothing wrong with it now, you might buy it and have them come out with something new right after that's even better.

  • I love my iPad, and I definitely prefer it over a netbook, but I wouldn't be using the netbook as a laptop replacement, and it sounds like that's what you really want to do.  I use my iPad mostly for web surfing, and as a highly portable computer that I can keep in my purse for small tasks while I'm away from home.  I also use it to some extent as an e-reader, a media player, and a gaming device.

For posting to your blog, that's definitely possible from the iPad, but the touch keyboard takes some getting used to.  On the whole, I think it works pretty well, but if I'm trying to knock out 1000 words on the subject of the week, I still prefer a traditional keyboard.  Of course, you can buy a peripheral keyboard to use with the iPad, but it's not that cheap (for a keyboard).

For photo editing, there are apps you can download for the iPad, but not specifically Shutterfly Studio.  So you would need to learn whatever new software you chose.

Overall, it sounds like you'd be better of with a netbook.  However, if you don't need the portability of a netbook, you might look into finding an inexpensive laptop.  The small size of the netbook is great if you want to carry it around with you, but it you're mostly going to use it at home, you might miss the larger display, extra hard drive space, etc.  It's not hard to find a basic laptop for around $350 or even less.

Do you mean work the kinks "in"?  Wink  Seems like it took them until Windows7 to get things right this time!

Yes, exactly LOL.  I switched from PC to MAc last year and I love it!  Bonus being not worrying about PC kinks anymore.

  • It really depends on how much you want to spend and what's important to you.  You can get a decent laptop for cheaper than an ipad.  I personally don't like typing too much on the ipad.  It also doesn't have a USB port (I'm not sure if it has an SD card slot) if that's something you'd want.

  • I use my iPad for about 70% of what I do and really don't have any problems. Although saying that I also have the keyboard attachment as well as the the camera kit connection. This maybe one of the few time I would recommend a net book, only because of your blog.
