Any Aestheticians on this board?
I am getting ready to begin classes to become an aesthetician. I am wondering if there is anyone on this board that has experience with being an aesthetician, or working in a spa or salon. What you can tell me about your job or what you know about the job and what I might be able to expect to make just starting out? Thanks.
Rachel
Re: Any Aestheticians on this board?
I was an aesthetician a few years ago. I enjoyed doing the treatments, but the school training did not prepare me for managers/owners wanting saleswomen. I worked at a few spas, one being Ulta Beauty. I hated it there. The girls who did hair always stole waxing clients and I ended up just being a store employee who knew about skincare. Once I got into a medical spa I liked it a lot more. I had regular clients and did more than just wax eyebrows. That's where the sales got me, though. It is definitely not my forte. The medical spa ended up closing and I went back into office work. Every so often I think about going back, but don't want to spend the money for credits to get my license back.
I guess my advice is to not going in thinking it's going to be all about just making someone feel good. While you're in school practice your selling techniques because that is going to help you a lot in the long run!

I got my esthetican license in April of this year. I acquired my license to have more credibility as a make-up artist. I have had a few job offers but I have no interest in working in a spa/salon as an esthetician right now. In a few years if I need a more stable job I will look for that. I was taught all through school that sales is very important. It is how many estheticians make most of their income. You perform the service then sell the at home remedies to your clients, then they come back because the at home stuff is working and they want the special treatments they can only get from you. Are you interested in a medical spa, leasing your own space, starting your own business, working in a big spa/salon? The esthetics industry is really growing, you should have no problem getting a job after graduating. I know at least 5 of the 11 girls in my class went right in to jobs.
Do you have any more specific questions? Feel free to pm me!
Aesthyerin, how did the hair stylists steal your clients? Wouldnt the client still need to come to you to be waxed? I always though stylists and aestheticians shared clients. I dont know much about it.
Im not sure what I want to end up doing with it. Im thinking I will work in a spa for awhile, gain a clientele then eventually move to a place where I can rent my space. My husband thinks I should own my own spa and rent space to others, but Im not sure I want that much responsibility with 2 small kids at home. Ive thought about going the medical route, but that just seems kind of boring to me for some reason. Sometimes I think I want to get really awesome at waxing and have that be my niche. I will just have to see how school goes. Im soooo excited about starting school. I think it will be a ton of fun and just something new after 6 years of being a SAHM.
