I used to own a pretty decent Sony 7.2 mp point and shoot (model T10) digital camera which died after a little more than 3 years of service. I loved the quality of the photos and however, I hate the delay on Sony cameras. I want something that takes a photo when you hit the button and not 3 seconds later. I miss too many moments with the Sony delay and it's frustrating. I've played with Canon and Nikon but I'm having trouble finding an non-biased opinion as these two brands are like Mac vs. Apple. Can anyone help me out here? I'm open to other options and I don't need anything fancy. Just your typical, run-of-the-mill, capture the memories item. I'd like to stay under $200 but am flexible.
Thanks in advance.
Re: recommend a decent point-n-shoot camera
I love the Canon Powershots. When I bought my first Canon a few years ago, I actually didn't want to buy a Canon (I don't remember why), and I spent ages comparing models from the different brands, but in the end I was happiest with the Canon IXUS I was looking at (IXUS is how they brand the low-end Powershots in Europe/Asia). I used that camera for years, and I'm often surprised with how bright and balanced the colors come out. I never really noticed too much of a delay in shooting, unless it was having trouble focusing (usually in pretty extreme cases like zooming from a moving vehicle).
I replaced my camera a few months ago, because I wanted one of the newer higher-end compact models with a 14x optical zoom (I missed the zoom on my old bulky Olympus, but had opted to give it up in favor of the convenience of a compact size). I was comparing similar models from a few different brands, and again I chose the Canon. This time it wasn't as clear a choice, and there were some things I liked better about some other models, but Canon did best at the things that were most important to me.
I'm really not that loyal to Canon, but they continue to impress me when I put them to the test. I've played a bit with some friends' compact cameras, and generally the Canons just seem to take better photos (more balanced color, clearer focus shooting without flash, etc).
Also, Canon (along with Nikon, Panasonic, Kodak, and others) gets a big bonus point in my book for using SD memory. I can't believe the brands that don't (i.e. Olympus and Sony). I think proprietary memory cards are ridiculous, since it limits the options for buying extra memory cards, and built-in card readers don't often support them. Even the iPad camera connector kit takes SD cards.
I also have a Canon Powershot (SD780is). I bought it after our Sony got destroyed by a wave on a vacation to Maui and I kept reading that Canon was the way to go. I have always been a loyal Sony user but, like you, didn't like the lag.
I'm still somewhat indifferent about my camera. I will say that my Canon takes pictures more quickly than the Sony did, but I do prefer the bright bold colors that I always got in my pictures with my old camera. The quality of my pictures is nice, but the colors seem more muted somehow, more blah. I definitely notice a difference between older and more recent pictures when I am flipping through my pictures on my computer. I see the same thing in the pictures my SIL prints for me from her Canon. She was also a former Sony user!
I think I am one of few but, if I could, I'd probably have gone with another Sony.
I love my Canon SD 790IS. And they have a new touch screen model that looks awesome.
PP, have you played with settings, etc? My camera captures AMAZING color. I'm always getting compliments on it. Surprised to hear that you aren't satisfied...

I have a Canon Powershot and I really like it. It doesn't have the delay that you are talking about like a Sony can have. I was missing pictures as well so that's why I switched from my Kodak to a Canon.

That's the link to the one I am talking about. It's currently $197 from Wal-Mart.
