Where to donate a computer?

Hey ladies!

DH graduated from a service academy and now has a PC we don't use (but that he had to buy). They said it was wiped clean, and now we're just looking for a place to take it off our hands. Any suggestions? We don't really have any people to give it to in our new town and its almost 5 years old.

  • Our Salvation Army has a sign out front that says they take them. Our city also offers several drop off locations where you can recycle computers and other household appliances.
  • You might also see if a women's shelter or starting up nonprofit could use it, before donating to someone who would resell it (not that there's a problem with that, but it gives you other options).

  • We tried the local women's shelter first, but they weren't taking any at the time and suggested a place that donates to local families in need.  I am sure if you all around to a few shelters you will find somewhere that would really appreciate it!

  • I googled places in my area that teach free computer classes and they were thrilled to have it.  Many teach basic computer classes to the poor and/or unemployed and then donate computers for people to use for their own small businesses.  You could also post on freecycle.  There is a guy on our freecycle who posts constantly, both taking and giving computers.  I think he just refurbishes them for fun and then gives them to people.

  • In addition to the previous suggestions, lots of schools take them too.  My yoga instructor's husband refurbishes computers for their local school district, who gives them to underpriviledged children.
