Things to do in Charleston...
Hey, SC ladies... popping over from the NC board...
DH and I are taking a long weekend trip (without DD) to Charleston in October. Do you have any can't-miss recs of things to do, places to eat, etc? Are there any tours that are especially cool? Are the ghost tours completely hokey?
Also, any places we should avoid, restaurants that aren't worth the hype, etc? We're planning to stay at the Doubletree right near the Market..
TIA!
Re: Things to do in Charleston...
We're now living in Chas. and have discovered some really neat things as a result.
For restaurants, my do list is Charleston Grill, Cypress, Jasmine Porch (at the Sanctuary at Kiawah Island), High Cotton, SNOB, Jestine's, and I've heard good things about Fig and The Oak. The ones that aren't worth the hype or have gone downhill are Hyman's, Magnolia's (never change their menu), and The Wreck. Fleet Landing and Mustard Seed are hit or miss, in my opinion.
The rooftop bar at Vendue Inn is a lot of fun and offers great views of the city. It's on East Bay Street across from Cypress.
There's a lot of history here, so it's worth it to check it out if you're game. Charles Town Landing is neat. The carriage tours are fun to do at least once. I haven't done a ghost tour here, but there's one about the seedy side of the city (pirates, whorehouses, transvestite serial killers, etc) that seems like it would be fun. I think it's called "Wicked Charleston" and it's run by Black Cat Tours. I'm trying to convince DH to take me on that around Halloween. Fingers crossed.
You can also tour Fort Sumter, Fort Moultrie, The Hunley (weekends only though because it's a working lab), USS Yorktown, Angel Oak, Drayton Hall, Boone Hall Plantation. Check out the plantations' websites to see if they've got anything going on like concerts or wine tours.
That's a ton of information, but if you have any other questions, feel free to PM me.
I agree, Vendue is really fun! I think a ghost tour is all about your expectations. I would totally do it and just have fun! Poogans Porch is super cute and delish.
have fun!!
