clearly i'm not in the mood to work yet this morning.... : )
do any of you own a toy hauler? lars and i were looking at the at the Fair on Sunday and are interested in learning more about them. it would be super to have for the different motorcycle events we'd like to attend or other out of town events where we'd have to rent a hotel.
we were shocked at how inexpensive they are! i know you can spend a lot on them as well but most were only around 18K and they were NICE!
so, what can you tell me about yours? what are the quirks? do you have to have a huge truck to tow them? (we don't want a 5th wheel one. we want one you can tow behind an SUV/truck)
EDIT: to clarify, we're looking at the camper/toy hauler combos where you drive the "toy" right into the camper
Re: does anyone own a toy hauler?
We are big campers and are constantly pulling things. Check your vehicle owners manual for the recommended towing weight. Keep in mind that the weight of the trailer does not include the toys or other items.
Most standard SUV's and trucks can pull a fair amount. My parents have a 24 ft camper that they pull with their 1/2 ton p/u and it struggles a little bit going up hills, etc. Last weekend they used our 3/4 ton and my Dad was amazed at the difference. Their camper is too big for your standard smaller SUV but would be fine with a larger SUV such as a Suburban.
As for quirks or issues, the biggest thing is storage. Would you be able to keep it parked at your place? Some cities have ordinances and neighbors can be pretty nasty if they think it's "blocking their views".
You will also be surprised at how much you spend "stocking" your camper. Thankfully we were still in the process of combining our households but I still ended up spending a ton. For a while we would just take things out of the house but then it would either be in the camper or we would forget it on the next trip. In the end it was easier to just buy things just for the camper. Even though it seems like just a camper, it is like another house in a way.
However, please don't let this stop you! We love being able to go at the last minute and just having to grab some food/clothes and be on the road.
(If you do end up buying something, try to avoid the "camper" type of stores for your supplies. Even though I avoid Walmart as much as possible, they have an amazing camper/motorhome section that is almost 1/2 the price of the camping type of stores. For example, we got some of the rods you put in the fridge to keep your stuff from moving around during traveling. Walmart was around $4 each. The one camping store was over $10 for the same thing!)
Whew..sorry that got so long!
I don't own one yet, but we have been researching and looking into them as well. We almost bought one a few years ago, but bought a house, so we had to put it on hold. We looked at them at the fair too, but they only had one toy hauler there on display. We go to track days all the time and it would be perfect for that. Do you guys do things like that too?
My DH is a research fanatic, so I can ask him if there are any he has his eye on for you.
we currently have a 4 door Jeep Rubicon and a Range Rover Sport. my jeep only has a 2k towing capacity but the RR has 7k+. we'd definitely like to keep the cars we have and not have to get something just because of the toy hauler.
any more info you can share would be great!
we definitely would plan on just having 2 of everything. i would never want to have to move things back and forth.
Not to state the obvious but also keep in mind when shopping like PP said that the weight of everything in the toy hauler has to be at or under the 7k tow range for your one vehicle...and just because it can tow 7k doesn't mean I'd try it. Some SUV's are rated very low for what they could actually tow and some are rated really high and shouldn't be towing heavy loads.
I've seen way too many SUV's towing boats and that tongue is nearly dragging on the freeway because it's so saggy.
definitely something i will be keeping in mind!
and the RV show is a great idea. we'll for sure have to go. i did check craigslist already and there weren't a ton of options but that changes daily so i'll keep my eyes peeled.
Speaking of toys... my dad got a call on Monday from a conservation officer that said he found our jet ski floating near an island on the other side of the lake!!!!
It got towed to a nearby resort and then luckily my dad got in touch with the neighbor at the cabin who went and got our trailer and hauled it back. Yikes! I guess the lake is up about 6" and there was a pretty big storm so it was washed away!
Sorry I can't help with the trailer info so I'll just contribute a story instead
