Successful Sugar Ant Extermination?

Anybody have any luck with a "greener" way of exterminating those little black sugar ants? They are taking over our house! We have 2 under 2, and 2 dogs and try really hard to use enviro friendly products but I am at my wits end with these things!

Re: Successful Sugar Ant Extermination?

  • i know this is a little late but i have read that grits work... i have not tried it because all my ant probs are out side and it will kill the ducks too!

you mix sugar with aany kind of grits and leave it ou on the counter on a piece of foil. ants, and ducks, dont have the ability to let off gas (fart or burp) so after ingesting even a part of a grain of grits it will start to glutenize and bubble and eventually well explode their little ant tummies, they also carry pieces back to feed other ants at the nest

you HAVE to mix with sugar to attract them to the grits

  • I've heard of sprinkling salt on cucumber peels & placing them at the little cracks where they come into the home (if you know where they're entering from). I've never tried it, but hey, it couldn't hurt!

  • Sorry, another late reply ... I've used cinnamon to control them in my house. If you can see where they're coming in, just sprinkle it around that area, they won't want to walk through it. If you can't tell where they're coming from, you can still use cinnamon to "corral" them and keep them from spreading further.

I'd also heard that spraying them with vinegar would help, but it didn't really work for me - I used my regular vinegar + water cleaning spray to wipe them up but it didn't seem to keep them from coming back.
