I need some help..

How do I go about applying for a job that I have NO experience at, but it is something I have always wanted to do and just to at least try?  Kinda like the girl breaking out of retail?

Re: I need some help..

  • Well, your biggest hurdle is going to be convincing them to hire you over another, more experienced, candidate. So I think you need to first answer the question: "Why should we hire you over an experienced candidate?' and address that in your cover letter.
  • good adivce above...talk to people and see if you know anyone with connections there, you may even consult your university to see if they have any other alumni who work there. Make a connection and ask to meet that person for coffee...your treat, and pick their brain about what kind of experience may help you break in, maybe there are volunteer experiences you can start with.
  • Consider what the job truly entails and see which skills you've developed in [retail/whatever] that would make you good at it. Pump them in your cover letter or resume.

Also consider what aspects of the career appeal to you, and look around for transitionary jobs that offer similar interests.

If it's something that a small bit of training can help with, take a small course related to it to see if you really do enjoy it and to at least develop an idea of what skills you'll need to learn, if not the skills themselves.
