Name change question

Hi ladies

I just got married on 7/31 in Indiana and frequented the knot boards, and just had a quick question about the whole name change so I thought I'd check here.

How long did it take you to complete the name changing process?  I am going to try to get the process started this week/next, but was clueless as to how long it takes, and my husband and I are trying to book flights for about a month from now, so I didn't know what name to book the flight under.

 Any advice?  Thanks so much!

Re: Name change question

  • Your first stop will be the social security office.  When I was there I was told that I had to wait 24 hours for my information to process through the system before I could go to the DMV to change my name on my driver's license.  I didn't know that and of course I had a good hair day on day 1 and not so much on day 2!

Anywhoo...I also just had to get a new passport (not sure if you'll need to do that for your trip).  That only took about 3 weeks to get back.  And as a note:  if you do have to get a new passport...they mail your marriage certificate & old passport back to you separately.  I panicked at first when I didn't get my marriage certificate with the new passport.

Book your flight under what name is going to be on your license/ passport.  They'll have to match for you to board the plane.

I had to make an actual trip to the bank...and take my marriage certificate too.  Just the driver's license didn't work.  Shoot...I got married last Oct and I still haven't changed my name on all my bills.

And congrats on your wedding!!!  And hope you have an awesome trip!

  • I would also suggest requesting a few copies of your marriage license. I know my name change process took longer than needed because I only had two, and kept having to wait on one to come back to move on to the next place.

I ended up using a service called MissNowMrs (you can just google it)

It was $30 at the time, but was so worth it. You put your information in once and it spits out all these awesome printed forms.

  • The whole process didn't take very long for me. I went to the SS office and got that part of it done. The next day I took my receipt from  the SS office and my marriage license to the license branch. They gave me a paper copy of my drivers license and said I should get the new card in the mail in about a week which I did and my SS card came shortly there after maybe the following week or so.

I don't know about having to get multiple copies of the marriage license all the places that needed it took photo copies so I only have the one and never needed to get any others. And I had to update a couple of accounts and get put on my husband's insurance. And when he started his new job they were able to use a photo copy of the license for the new insurance and such. I never had any of the places keep my license either so IDK what that was all about.

  • As far as a flight goes it...Book it in your married name.  Because all you need to show for you flight is your drivers license.  Go immediately to the social security offic to change your name there.  Ask them for a verification letter.  Take that letter, your birth certificate (which you can get from the health dept. in the county you were born in) take your marriage license and if you need your address change to proofs of address. Like a bill statement.  They will give you your new license.  You'll get your official social security card with 10 business days after applying and your new license with in 7 (I got mine in 3)  good luck.
