BPA info

I was hoping you could give me the bad, ugly and horrible basics of BPA.  I would like to switch our containers but the ones we have stack so nicely and work well in a small space.  Many of the BPA free or glass versions take up so much more space.  DH takes his lunch to work everyday and instead of using lots of baggies we use the plastic containers and then wash and reuse.  I am hoping that you will tell me that it's only bad if they get heated with food in them, but that might be wishful thinking.

Re: BPA info

  • I used to work at a baby retail shop and we were one of the first places that started to carry BPA free bottles. All the info I'm about to give you is directly from the training I received from the bottle company rep.

First, you only have to worry if your plastic containers are clear. If they are opaque or colored, they do not contain BPA (I was told that BPA is a result of making the plastic clear). If your containers are clear, then they are still safe as long as they have never been heated or scratched. To keep the chemicals from leeching into food, companies do put on a protective layer, but if that layer is scratched, then the chemicals can leech.

  • BPA is leached out of plastic when it is heated or if it contains acidic foods (tomato soup, lemony dishes etc..)

The previous poster is correct, you only need to worry about clear strong plastics having BPA. I think the rubbermaid or glad, whichever that stack well don't have BPA anymore, look into it.

A lot of people feel glass is better as there is probably some other chemical in plastic we'll discover is bad for us in a few years.

Personally I'm content with my plastic containers, as we have a lot of people in the house and cook huge quantities every night, but I would never heat anything in them.

I agree. If you wanna switch to glass in the future, pyrex stack very nicely. You can find good deals at their outlet stores if there is one close to you.

  • I've seen some really nice sets of little pyrex containers at Target, and a big beefy set at Costco for very reasonable prices.
