Introduction: I'm new here
Hi everyone! I'm new to the nest/bump, & am coming out of lurking to say hello (hi!). DH & I are hoping to buy property sometime soon & plan on building it from the bottom up with the eventual goal being self-sustainable homesteading (pretty crazy, LOL). We are eco-conscious, & I'll tell you, I don't know many others in real life (my parents are the worst). I like what I've been reading on here, & hope to contribute to some posts as I go along... I'm Stephanie, by the way; nice to meet you all!

Re: Introduction: I'm new here
Hi Stephanie! This board is a great, supportive and informative place- it's nice to be able to be with like-minded folks!
Welcome!
OMG that sounds crazy yeah... CRAZY AWESOME!! I am jealous!! I would love to live on more land and be as off the grid as possible. I know a few girls here have been doing building/remodeling with a green focus, but I haven't followed much since I'm darn broke and single and just working on the day to day! Maybe someday...
Welcome!!
Thanks to everyone for all the kind words! *supergreen, we do happen to live in upstate NY! The land is super cheap near the Adirondacks... & *jebuell, I plan on blogging (though nothing is going to surface for awhile), but it's definitely a slow process... and here's the kicker: we are planning on a temporary home while we fix up the land... & have decided on a YURT.... are we crazy?? LOL
If anyone has any information about yurt living, please share. We also plan on keeping bees, so if anyone has any experience in that realm, it would be greatly appreciated.
Looking forward to contributing as well! Thanks again!
Welcome!
It's always good to "see new faces" around here!
Ah! I would LOVE to live in a Yurt. Is it crazy that's one of my dreams? I'd almost rather live in a Yurt than a house. We shall see.
Clearly I have never lived in one personally, but when I mentioned it to friends on FB I had a handful say they'd lived in one and they loved it. I have never heard from anyone who didn't enjoy living in it. Though most of my friends are tree hugging hippies.
WOW, these bolded parts really surprised me! I'd love to hear more stories of your friends' yurts.... have you ever visited them there? REALLY surprised that people do live in yurts! (it seems foreign to everyone that I mention it to) You're lucky you've got some hippie friends! ::jealous!::
Yep, the yurt is it, and by temporary, I mean 5-10 years LOL (while we build the home........) I might post again on the topic of yurts, so look out!
We're looking in Ithaca, where DH's family lives. The property we have our eye on is 33 acres, with a 1850's farmhouse and barn, with 5 already-tilled farm plots. I crunched the numbers, and that whole property costs as much as the living room in my townhouse. GAH!
I went to a really "hippy" school so everyone from my teachers to classmates were mostly tree huggers.
What's funny is- I wasn't! It wasn't until last year when I became more aware of what I eat and use on my body that I started making changes but I guess I really got into it!
I have never been able to visit any of my friends' yurts. There are three that responded to my FB post (this was last year sometime otherwise I'd look it up for you) and most of them lived in Yurts either in college or while building their homes and they no longer live in them. But I bought a Yurt Book (Living in the Round) and did all of the research to having one legally in California before my divorce and fleeing to Arizona. Now I gotta start over but at least not from square one. I even made a blog post about my desire to live in a Yurt.
Oh! And I was on a road trip that brought me through Colorado last month and as we were driving out my boyfriend said "Oh look, Yurts!" Sure enough, we were passing the model "homes" for the Colorado Yurt Company! I wanted to stop so badly but we still had 10 hours of driving ahead of us. But my dream "home" is one large living yurt, two small attached bedroom yurts, two unattached TeePees, and a central bath house. I even started drawing up my own plans at one point. I'm a wee bit fanatical when it comes to Yurts.
Gee, I thought I responded back on Wednesday...
guess my newness is showing.... maybe the nest ate it
Thanks for sharing your "yurt love!" I like the set-up you mentioned. I couldn't get away with a central bath house where I live, or I'd be trekking through 3 feet of snow to pee in winter! HAHA!
I enjoyed reading your blog! I too am eco-friendly and incredibly frugal.... it helps that cloth and vinegar are cheaper than paper and bleach! LOL
Anyway, viva la yurt!
