Need fireplace help please

J and I have a fireplace in the house we rent. Well...it's actually one of those stove-like fireplaces with an electric fan to let in heat (the fan doesn't work anymore). When we moved in, the landlord told us the lining of the fireplace is shifted about halfway up so he's not sure the chimney is usable. His wife thinks it's perfectly fine.

We've asked the local town handyman if he'd take a look at it and fix it (the expense we pay comes out of the next month's rent) and he's refused numerous times. I just need someone to check it out and fix whatever needs to be fixed. I don't really know where to start looking, or what to look for...fireplace/chimney repair?

Any company suggestions or advice? TIA!

  • I don't have any suggestions for companies, but I'd probably start my search on Yelp and go from there.

  • I would try contacting someone like a chimney sweep. They would probably know someone who could fix it.

This.  I'd try calling one and asking them to either come out and look (if the stove hasn't been used in awhile you'd need to get the chimney cleaned anyway).

  • I think professional services are best for chimney related work. Recently my neighbor, told me about professional chimney sweeps in Suffolk county, who has all the required experience and knowledge about this field with affordable fees. They are licensed and certified chimney sweeps.
