Volunteer work

Do you volunteer?  If so, what organization do you volunteer for?  How has your experience been?

If not, is there an organization you would like to join?  What has held you back from participating?

Re: Volunteer work

  • I am an advisor for my sorority (it's a volunteer position). With them i end up participating in a lot of volunteer and philanthropy, indirectly (memory walks, relay for life, alumni heart-disease walks, playground projects, donating and collecting goods for maine seacoast mission, etc. i love it. i love seeing girls "get it" and grow up, and learn to lose the idealism but still aim to be Good People Who Do Good Things by realistic means.

I thought about volunteering with my local Literacy organization, teaching reading and fluency to speakers and non-speakers of english. I've always been interested in language acquisition, and helping those who want to learn the language after moving to the states. I cant do it though, because i dont have a good schedule for it.

  • I've done a lot of volunteer work with Relay For Life while I was in college. Had I graduated a semester earlier, I probably could've had a job with ACS from all of my years of helping organize RFL. I loved all the work I put in for them and would love to help out for a bigger scale RFL.

  • I run the Royalty section of my horse group.  I work with girls who are the Queen and Princess of the club for the year.  We do parades, rodeos, etc.  I also put the contest together every year.
It's not a huge organization but I enjoy doing it because these girls are role models for the little girls that see them on their horses and in their crowns.

I've worked with the Wishing Star- A lot like Make a Wish, but just don't have time to do it anymore unfortunately.  Hopefully when I finish my Master's in July I've have more time to find some new places to volunteer.
  • H and I both volunteer at our church. We are involved with the youth group and do a lot of things for them, helping with food, the director get ready, give presentations, etc.

  • I don't currently, but I would love to start doing volunteer work for the Stephanie Spielman fund or any other cancer organization.  My dad is a survivor so it is a cause that means a lot to me.

I have also looked into volunteering with the USO but the closest center to us is 45 minutes or so away and I know myself enough to know I probably wouldn't be willing to make that drive often.

  • I (like nobs) did a lot of volunteer work first through my sorority, then as an advisor.  We did quite a bit of work for Campfire Girls and the American Cancer Society.

I was a youth group sponsor for my church and a Sunday School teacher for years, but H and I just found a new church together and we've yet to get too involved.

I've done several work mission trips with church (Heifer Ranch in AR- LOVE this organization and did some work in New Mexico).  Nothing regular.  They go every summer somewhere, but I'm not always available.

I've always wanted to do volunteer work for Habitat for Humanity.  I've done some work with them through other groups, but never on my own.

  • Whenever I can get someone to take Camden, I like to go in & volunteer in my daughters Head Start classroom. Im also the president of the parent committee there.

I know most of the children & the households they come from. It means a lot to me to go in there & give them the attention they might be lacking at home, and it means alot to them too.

  • My H and I volunteer in nursery at our church.  So once a month we take care of the little kiddos during the service.  Since I work at a school and get the summers off I spend some time volunteering at a local animal shelter.  I can't get enough of animals so I love to play with them and walk them.  The problem is that I always want to take them all home with me!
  • I am a selfish biitch, who says "tough shiit" to those who are in need of anything. Wink

To be honest, I really am a shiity person though. I don't even have time to give to my friends, family, loved ones, let alone other needy people. I wish I could, but its literally impossible right now.

I would love to be able to do some volunteer work at some point in the future... and there are a billion things I would like to do. But for now, I will remain the selfish biitch, who has no time for anyone but herself (and husband, if he is lucky)

  • I love volunteer work, but I've cut back a lot of what I do since med school takes up so much time.

I still volunteer regularly at the free clinic we run downtown.  It's nicer now though since I can actually practice and put some of my medical education to use (properly supervised, of course).  I also still volunteer with Girl Scouts whenever I can to help organize and run some of the big educational events the local council puts on, and I volunteer with the local hospice, mostly just as a friend to people on hospice care and give some temporary relief to their caregivers.  I do Habitat for Humanity builds about once a season and work with the Red Cross about every month on whatever projects they have going.  I do a little more when opportunities arise, but no other regular activities.

I would love to get involved in the little sisters program, but the thing holding me back from that is the time committment.  A lot of volunteer work I do can be arranged around my schedule, but kids who are in big brothers/big sisters need a lot of time, and I wouldn't feel right about signing up when I wasn't completely sure I could manage all of it.

  • I've volunteered for Relay for Life and Race for the Cure. Breast cancer runs in my family so I donate my time and money to these causes the most. I would love join an organization like big brother/ big sisters to help out younger kids.

  • I'm getting involved in a pen pal program that I'm so excited about.  Honestly, I have had such little interaction with kids, I'm happy that this program is around where I can help kids learn and help myself feel more comfortable talking to kids.

I did a ton of volunteer work in 4-H.  I am searching for a riding program in the area similar to one we had in Western Ma - helping ind. with physical disabilities.  Unfortunately, I haven't found the right program yet.  Hopefully someday soon I'll find the right place!

I haven't, thanks for the idea!  I wouldn't have thought of that!

They do have equestrian events here.  I've loaned my horse to them a few years for the state competition... It's a really fun event to be a part of!
