AW Front Bed Transformation PIP

Over labor day weekend we finally finished our new front flower beds.  Here is what they originally looked like when we bought the house:

  • What I didn't have time to add this morning is that I know it looks very sparse right now but next year I plant to fill in with lots of perennials and eventually the conifers will fill out over time.  I wanted to get a good base going first with evergreens that would work in the shady spot, not outgrow the space for many years, and would look good all year round even covered with snow.  And seeing as how pricey they are (because they grow so slow these plants are already many years old...the blue tree in the back is approx 15 years old!) we're waiting for spring before we buy any more plants.

  • What happened to the stones? I bet that was a lot of work!

Ha ha yes it was!  But it was also the most boring flower bed ever.  It didn't help that we did all of that on a hot, humid day.  We were able to shovel some of it but the vast majority of it was removed by us on our hands and knees.  The gravel is sitting on our back patio right now and will go in an overgrown flower bed in the back.  Right now the soil of the bed is so high it is touching the siding!  So everything is getting dug out and I'm working on moving the plants I want to another location.  The back flower bed will be just gravel for now because we're going to be completely redoing the patio and basement exterior in a few years.

  • Are you on a lake?

You know, that looks like a house I'd see in the upper midwest. It reminds me of my FILs place: on a lake in MN. Windows all over the place.

In MN, you'd be out on the deck shucking fresh corn. What do they do in Wisconsin- sit on the deck eating cheese curds?

    Wink

  • No we're on a pond.  We own 1.5 ponds actually (our property line runs through the second pond) with an island in between and marsh on either side.

Yes, it's a very typical 70's raised ranch with lots of windows.  We bought the place because it's in a great location, is sitting on 3 acres of land, and has a lot of potential.   We have many years of DIY renovating to do to make it what we really want though.  Now that we have the important stuff out of the way (mechanical systems, water systems, gutters, etc.) we can start working on the cosmetic stuff.  Next year we're starting our huge bathrooms and bedrooms reno...I can't wait to get rid of the avocado and goldenrod bathrooms!

We shuck both corn and green beans on the deck thank you very much.  Stick out tongue  But we also eat plenty of fresh cheese curds.  The squeaker the better!

  • Holy cow.  The idea of shoveling all those stones makes me cringe.

Possibly because we did the same thing this past summer.

It looks nice!  What all got put in there?

Actually I just finished a blog post about each conifer we bought.  It took me a lot of research to find what would work in the shade and stay small (for the next 10-20 years at least).  When I had a list of what I wanted I couldn't find any of them locally and was informed that most of them would burn.  I found a great little place run out of someone's home that specializes in rare conifers and he was a wealth of knowledge giving me ideas of what would or wouldn't work.  I bought most of my conifers from there with a few of the more common ones from another local nursery.

The perennials I have in there were all leftovers from my other larger flower bed project (which I haven't posted about because I don't have pictures uploaded online yet) or things I found on sale recently/got for free from my garden club.  Here's the complete list of what's in there:

Abies koreana 'Starker's Dwarf', Korean Fir
Abies lasiocarpa var. Arizonica 'Glauca Compacta', Cork Bark Fir
    Alchemilla vulgaris (mollis), Lady's Mantle
    Aquilegia skinneri 'Tequila Sunrise', Columbine
    Astilbie, unkown variety
Athyrium niponicum 'Pictum', Japanese Painted Fern
Chamaecyparis pisifera 'White Pygmy', Sawara Cypress
    Hosta sieboldiana 'Frances Williams' Funkia
    Hosta tokudama 'Love Pat'
    Hosta, 'Gold Edger'
    Hosta, 'Golden Tiara'
    Hosta, 'Sum & Substance'
    Hosta, unkown variety
Taxus cuspidata 'Nana Aurescens', Japanese Yew
Thalictrum rochebruneanum 'Lavender Mist', Meadow Rue
    Tsuga canadensis 'Frostie', Canadian Hemlock
    Tsuga canadensis 'Jeddeloh', Canadian Hemlock
    Varigated Grass, unkown variety

I'm a total geek and keep track of everything I buy, when, where, and for how much in an Excel spreadsheet.  Aren't databases awesome?  Big Smile

I am an Excel spreadsheet whore.  Everything I do goes into a spreadsheet.

LOL I knew you would say that!  But knowing our line of work it only makes sense.  We've been working on planning out our big remodel next year and I can't even begin to count the number of Excel files I've made.  Timeline, budget, ideas for each room, product sources, what things will be stored where, what parts of the house will be touched for each phase, etc.  All I really need on a computer is the internet and Excel.
