Washington DC

DH and I have been discussing taking a trip to DC because neither of us have been since we were in Elementary school. For those of you that have been what do you recommend that is a must, other than the obvious monuments. What restaurants, etc. Thanks!

Re: Washington DC

  • A show at the Kennedy Center would be great!

The National Zoo is also amazing.  Free admission- you just have to pay for parking.

I also recommend eating lunch at the Old Post Office.  They have a huge mix of different ethnic foods and it is convenient if you are visiting the Smithsonians (highly recommended).

  • Popular Smithsonians (worth visitng, in my opinion) are the Natural history, American History, and the Air & Space. I've heard good things about the Holocaust museum and the Spy Museum, but I've never been to either.  Those aren't free, though, and I think you have to get tickets in advance (at least for the Holocaust one, I think). The holocaust museum is supposed to make quite an impact, though, so I don't know if you want to schedule a downer day or not.  I haven't done a whole lot of eating in DC, so I can't really help you there. II did want to mention a hotel deal I saw on travelzoo:

  • I've been to the Holocaust Museum twice I think- I would say it's a must-see. There is a new Capitol Visitor's Center and you can get a free (I think) tour of the Capitol building, although it's pretty short and you don't get to see *everything.* I also like walking around the monuments (especially at night!), and you can go to the top of the Washington Monument to get a good view (you can go online and reserve tickets and they're pretty cheap, like $1 I think).
  • I would also recommend the zoo. It is metro accessible.

If you are looking for a really nice restaurant, I would recommend 1789 in Georgetown. I have not been, but according to DH Les halles is good.  If you are near Bethesda Persimmon is good and so is Red Tomato Cafe, especially if you like Brick Oven Pizza.

I have not been to the Spy Museum either however I have also heard it was good. The holocaust museum is very good. It is free, but you do need a pass if going during the busy season (March - August).

I also like the FDR memorial

When do you plan to go?

  • I love DC! DH and I have been a few times over the last few years. I highly recommend the Smithsonian Museums. They are free and there is so much to see you could spend an entire trip just seeing those alone. My favorite is American History. Julia Child's kitchen is an exhibit there now and it is really cool. I just saw it when we went in July.

We have done one of those hop on/hop off city tour buses when we went with DH's parents and that was a great way to take in a lot of the city. You get to see Georgetown, the Embassies, Ford Theater, etc. Also, we usually just do hotwire for the rooms and have never been disappointed. The last hotel we stayed in was right across from Union Station and had a great Irish pub we ate at. Unfortunately I can't remember the name though. Have fun!

  • Thanks for all the recs Ladies.

Curbside, we are trying to plan to go this fall sometime. DH and I are both hot natured so we thought fall would be a great time to go with all the walking we will be doing. And we both love fall, everything seems so pretty with all the leaves changing.

  • I know there are numerous fall festivals, I am trying to remember specific ones.

Taste of Georgetown is in October and this website lists various DC festivals. I do not think they have dates, but with a little more research you should be able to find dates.

Another thing worth checking out is the National Cathedral
