Post-Interview -- So frustrated :-(
I took part in a group interview of 8 candidates at a retail store last week for sales positions. I worked at this store during the holiday seasons from '02-'04 and when we were asked to talk individually about what we would bring to the Company, I went into detail about my product knowledge and my customer service strengths. The other candidates just made superficial remarks about the store. When the interview was over the manager who interviewed us took only me aside to find out more about my understanding of the Company and she sounded impressed.
She promised all of us that we would hear from her today, Sept. 10, if we were to be hired or not. She never called. So I called the store at 5:30 to find out that she had already left for the day. I left my name and number for her to call me back. I also asked the manager on the phone if interviewees had been contacted today as promised and he said yes.
I'm really bummed out because this job, IMO, is a great fit for me. Now I'm thinking (or overthinking) that the management of the store thinks that being a fortysomething person I'll be demanding a sizeable wage, whereas the college students who also interviewed with me will happily take $8.50/hr. It's hard to know what to think and speculation does no good. If only I could move on -- but I want this job so badly.

Could it be that they'll contact you later about taking on a role with more responsibility? Maybe they're looking at ways to open up an opportunity like that for you since you know so much about the company and have more experience.
Honestly, whether they're trying to do that or not, they may see you as overqualified for a sales position. Is this sales job what you really want to do? Would you want to get paid a "sizeable wage" that they may not be able to provide?
If you're happy with a sales job there at a lower wage, you may want to follow up next week to be sure all the interviewees were really contacted (sounds like that manager you spoke to might have just been giving out an answer at the end of a long day and could be misinformed), and if you're really not hired, ask them if they'd be wiling to provide feedback to you. That would give you a chance to rebuff those claims.

I don't think they see me as overqualified since I was a secretary for 17 years and was a retail sales associate for a few major companies only for 4 holiday seasons.
On the wage issue I'm realistic: I'll take as little as $10/hr. The manager I interviewed with said that this store is the most thriving one in the company, so they can afford that. Wages were naver discussed in the interview.
were you supposed to hear either way...perhaps the manager called the wrong number...
Don't stress over the weekend and call again on Monday
