Let me ask a sports/alma mater question.
Did you graduate from the school that you cheer on in sports?
There is a huge debate about this on my FB right now. Mostly because of the WVU/Marshall game. A lot of my friends went to Marshall but root for WVU. The reasons for not going to WVU vary from too far away to more cost effective to go to Marshall, and so on.
One friend says you shouldn't even cheer for a team unless you went to school there. His FI says unless you graduated college you shouldn't even cheer for college teams, at all.
I find this completely stupid. That is like saying just because I didn't play in the MLB, I shouldn't cheer for them. I don't agree with them at all. It is turning into a huge debate, so what do you all think?

Re: Let me ask a sports/alma mater question.
I think that's RIDICULOUS what your friends and friends FI say.
My H for example, grew up watching South Carolina play. And a lot of his family (adults, grandparents, etc.) went to Auburn and his grandfather taught at Michigan. He loves these teams and cheers for them. Especially Michigan but mostly South Carolina.
We however went to the University of Nevada, Reno. We went to games and cheered. But they aren't that good, they won't be going anywhere and his other teams are decent. He loves the SEC and all things SEC.
I think it's proximity. A lot of people cheer for the team they live near, or grew up by. My dad is a die hard LA Kings fan because he grew up there.
People have all kinds of reasons for loving a team, who cares what the reason is?
I grew up loving WVU. My papaw was the biggest fan ever. My aunt went to law school there. But, when it came time for college I didn't want to go that far away, so I went to Marshall.
My FI on the other hand grew up loving UGA. He has family that lives about an hour from Athens, so that played a factor in it. But, he has never set foot in the school. Of course he always dreamed of it, but he never did.
I think the FB friend and his FI are just plain crazy. They sure stirred the crap up on my FB last night. It made for some good reading, but I still think they are way out of line.

H and I went to Marquette University, which is in the Big East Conference.
H used to work for St. John's, a conference rival and when he would watch Marquette play St. John's, he didn't really cheer at all. Partly because it was poor form, partly because he knew it would be nice for both teams to win. That being said, what really grates the both of us are people who attend (for example) Marquette and then cheer for Notre Dame who is also Big East. And rivals. I never understood why the students and alma mater from one university would cheer on a rival school.
That being said, both of us are also from Michigan, so we root for Michigan State athletics. We grew up cheering for them, our families cheered for them (except for those family members which went to Michigan) , Michigan State tailgates are a way of life for us. But in 2006, when Michigan State played Marquette in the first round of the NCAA, we didn't root for Michigan State. We rooted for Marquette. Alma mater uber alle.
But anyway, there is a plethora of reasons why any given person would root for any given team. We went to Marquette, H worked for St. John's, we grew up in Michigan. We have connections to those universities. Hell, we lived in Seattle, and I LOVE the Seahawks (even though they suck now). We lived in St. Louis and root for the Cardinals (even though they pissed their season away). There are so many reason and connections, and they don't always make sense.
I find it odd that if you went to Marshall you would cheer for WVU. I do not really get that.
There are plenty of people who cheer for schools they did not go to. I would not say you have to go to a school to cheer for them. However I think if you went there you have more of a connection with the program.
As for me, I cheer for Penn State because I grew up in PA and my dad went there. He is a big Penn State fan. I have been to campus on various occasions so I feel I have some connection to the school. I had no desire to go there for college though.
My undergrad was a small division three, they do not even have a football team.
I went to Duke for grad school and they are the school I follow most. I liked Duke basketball prior to going to school there, but I like it even more now. I have a different understanding of what goes on that I could not have gotten as a non-student. I also follow their other sports. They were horrible at football the two years I was there and I am excited to see the program improving. I do not understand not cheering for your school just because they are not any good. Sure it is harder to cheer for you team if they are losing, but I think you should still support your school.
For those who went to one school but cheer for another, do you donate money to either school? I donate money to the schools I went to, but that is it.
Hmmm...I may have a different opinion on this than most people.
My #1 team is a school that I did not go to. BUT I cheer for them so passionately because my husband is a coach at this school. So, while I love the school, love the teams, want them to do well because it is fun to see them win, it means more to me than that. The athletic department is our livelihood. It pays the bills, it is my husband's dream and it is more than just a win or a loss to us. And, yes, how other athletic teams at this college does sort of does affect my DH's job. The mood in the athletic department determines a lot of the decisions made by the administration. And I also work at this school and working there, in the department that I do, has really lead me to believe in this school and what it does for people's lives!
My other two favorite schools are schools that I did attend.
Now, I don't think that you HAVE to attend a school in order to cheer for them but, living in Alabama, where the majority of the Alabama fans have absolutely ZERO connection to the university, I think it is nice to have some real reason to cheer for the teams that you do. Of course there are Alabama fans who attended UA but more often than not, the loud, obnoxious, ridiculous fans we see out around town have never even stepped foot in Tuscaloosa. Many will readily admit that they only reason they are Alabama fans is to "rebel" against Auburn because they live here. I have a whole big soap box about this but I won't get into it now.

That's silly! How many Yankees fans are there across the country and even in Japan? (I'm not one of them)
There was a similar debate about this on a local sports talk station of how a person should honor the team they grow up around. For example, I'm a huge Eagles fan- I grew up around Philly for me to be a Broncos fan is nonsense.
see more funny videos, and check out our Yo Dawg lols!
I completely agree with that sentiment - if you went there, you should support it.
As for cheering for other schools, we don't donate to those programs. The only programs we donate to are our alma mater (undergrad) and H's employer. H doesn't even donate to his alma mater for law school since while it does have teams he supports (and friends who work in that respective athletic department), he doesn't have a strong affinity to it.
Ha, seeing as both of our respective H's paychecks depend on the performance of their departments, I completely back you up on this one.
For you, do you find that you're more emotionally connected to these teams than others? My H always talks about "the kids" and how great they are, what they go through and how hard they work, that when I see them win, it's like my family just played, even though I didn't do anything but sit there, cheer and watch.
Absolutely! I truly care about all of DH's players and every aspect of their lives and I do know how much they go through, how much they give up, the pressure that is on them...I hate it when things don't work out on the game field for them.
I've always felt an immediate and strong connection with the schools DH has coached at but I also think a big part of that is that we've been very blessed in him ending up at fantastic schools. Honestly, I really wish I would have gotten my undergrad at the school we are at now...I love it for the athletics and the environment here but, like I said, I truly believe in this school and I think it would be awesome to have been a student here!
DH's players and all members of this athletic department, players, coaches, admin, all are like my family. Especially since, in coaching, we move so often and currently live over 2,000 miles away from our family.

I don't cheer for WVU when they are playing Marshall, but I do cheer them on otherwise.
The argument on FB had a lot to do with people that never went to college, too. The dbag was saying if you didn't go to school you had no right to cheer for anyone, at all. He is obviously an idiot.

That's silly. I'm a WVU fan as well (seems to be a lot of us here, huh?) I did not go to WVU, but I grew up nearby. It is my hometown team. Plus, the school where I did go to college plays FCS, and not very well at that.
I do find it a bit weird when someone with seemingly no ties to a particular team is a rabid fan (didn't go to school there, didn't grow up nearby, no family connection, etc.). But, whatever.
I totally agree.

I am an Alabama fan and did not attend school there. Well not really. I've taken a few classes there through a distance program they have.
My grandfather went there, my grandmother went there, my mother went to a satellite school and I almost went there but at the last moment ended up going to Dayton.
I cheer for Dayton all day long but they are Pioneer League in football and it's not nearly as entertaining as the SEC. Basketball? I've got mad love for the Flyers (and Alabama as well).
The whole sentiment that you can not cheer for a team unless you went there is almost as asinine as the theory of people cheering for Alabama just to be anti-Auburn.

"Ew. I've read all of two posts from you, and you stink like rotting garbage."
Call me crazy but the school isn't going to make enough money to support their athletic programs if the only money they have coming in is the student section. No one can convince me that the other 75% of the stadium/gym/whatever is made up of Alumni only. Nor should it be.
The one who said unless you graduated from a particular college you should not cheer at all is a complete dovchelord. Ignorance at it's finest.
I think being employed by the school is a very valid reason to cheer for them, I see nothing wrong with that.
I think that is a dumb argument as well. Both H and I are die hard Ohio State fans. We were both born and raised in central Ohio. I graduated from Ohio State. H's Grandma works at OSU and has for years. His Grandpa also retired from there.
I grew up in a Ohio State loving family, so it was natural that I followed as well. I guess it is just in my blood even though I was the first in the family to graduate from there.
What the OP's friends are saying just mean they are douches who care wayyy too much about other ppl's business.
My H is a huge Texas fan. He lived in Texas for awhile, grew to love them, then got moved by the military and kept being a fan. The schools he's gone to haven't had football programs or even decent basketball programs. I don't knock him for being a fan...although a lot of our friends do. I think it's ridiculous and stupid.
People take sports way too seriously sometimes. If that same logic applied to all sports, I shouldn't be a Mavericks fan [although, i'm a thunder fan, too]. Or a Redskins fan. Sigh.
I agree, I don't think it's anyone's business why someone cheers for any particular team.
However, I do believe there are different levels based on connection. There is a very special, unrivaled connection between an Alumni and their beloved team & school. An understanding & experience that can ONLY be gained from attending AND graduating from the school. Then, if you participate in something directly related to a particular sport (mainly football), that connection is even stronger. For example, both DH and I graduated from Auburn and we were both in marching band. We are, and always have been, 100% about our football team. We met each other, and all of our friends b/c of football/band and have seen each other grow from college kids to married couples to parents. We all stay after the game & sing the Alma Mater with the band every game. As weird as it sounds, we are who we are b/c of Auburn football. We are VERY proud of it too.
A student, at Auburn, who is not interested in football is just not going to love Auburn like the students who love football. Many of us work at Auburn too, and while we are proud of it, it doesn't really hold a candle to what we feel as Alumni. It is wonderful and very fitting, and brings with it an appreciation that others who simply draw a paycheck can't understand. MANY alumni come back/stay in Auburn because of the strong connection we feel to our school, and I am proud to say it, it is mostly due to our Tigers.
We do, but that's because H got a nice paycheck from the school that was in the same conference as our alma mater. It's bad form to cheer against the hand that feeds you.
I went to a Division III school and our football team was never very competitive (the program was actually cut when I was a sophomore). Our only competitive team was our women's bowling team, who went to nationals a few times.
I don't follow college football, but I'll root for Rutgers (NJ's state university) if they're playing a big game. For me it's more a matter of state pride than anything else.
Super late, so it doesn't matter, but I'm bored.
In Kentucky, you're either a Kentucky or a Lousiville fan. It doesn't matter if you go to a small private college in-state, or a smaller public college in-state, it's widely understood that you will still cheer for one of these teams. Big UK games caused much more of an uproar at my college than our own sports did because they were, well, better. Like when UK beat LSU football in 2007 (I think), people went ape-sh!t and were running out of their rooms/houses yelling and cheering.
Go Racers!
