XP: How cold is too cold for outdoor Halloween party?

-->
DH & I have a small house, and wanted to have a housewarming party to invite the family over, but it wasn't ready this summer. We have a huge backyard & thought of a housewarming party/ halloween party.  BUT weather in Chicago is SO unpredictable. If I send invites out now, and a month later it's raining or freezing, I'm screwed.  What temp is too cold to have an outdoor party? We'll have the food inside, and outside have tables & chairs & firepit.  The house is just too small to have everyone inside.  Some suggested renting outdoor heaters - what do they cost & where do you rent them from? I'm in the west burbs.  OR would it be lame to have a Halloween party during the day, say 3pm, so at least the sun would be out?

thoughts?

Re: XP: How cold is too cold for outdoor Halloween party?

  • I think that's a cute idea, and in fact, DH and I were throwing around the same thought.  I think that as long as you have a fire pit or some sort of outdoor heating available, and people have the option of stepping inside the house for a few minutes to warm up if need be, you won't have a problem. Remember, you can always add a rain date (sans costumes) to the invite in case the weather gets to bad.  I would just make it crystal clear that this is an OUTdoor party, and they should dress appropriately.
  • I have been to a couple of evening Halloween parties and think that they are great!   Sure it can be cool in October, but with some cocktails and a fire pit, people will have a great time!
  • Halloween parties are great!  I went to a few that were held outdoors/in a garage.  Is that a possiblilty for you guys?  maybe you can have space set up in teh garage for people to warm up/hang out in .
