Lurker with a Question about Soap Nuts

Hello!  I have never posted here but I am a regular lurker.  My husband and I live an environmentally conscious lifestyle in the concrete jungle that is Chicago.  Our friends have dubbed me the environment-loathing environmentalist, as I really can't stand most outdoor activities (unless they involve the beach and alcohol) and I am scared of most insects, reptiles, and animals lol.  We are constantly looking for ways to become even greener, and I have been inspired by the many awesome ideas on this board.

I have been researching laundry detergent alternatives.  I have looked into making our own, but I am intrigued by soap nuts.  I was wondering if anyone here has experience with them?  Do they work?  How cost effective are they?  Where do you purchase them?  Thanks in advance for the info!

Re: Lurker with a Question about Soap Nuts

  • no info on the soap nuts but wanted to add that i too am a "environment-loathing environmentalist" (from Chicago).
  • We use them sometimes (we are still getting rid of our liquid stashes), so I haven't really mastered them, LOL Depending on the size of your load, you'll use more soap nuts, but we toss about 3 or 4 in there, and each nut gets about 4 uses (maybe 5).... but the price is right, we got a box of Maggie's brand from amazon.com. It's about 20 bucks for 80 loads... but it's worth it, they're GREAT for delicates :-)

  • We were not impressed with soap nuts.  They may have worked on my work clothes, which don't get "dirty," but they did not work on DH's clothes.  He is a construction electrician, so his clothes sometimes have mud, grease, drywall, etc on them.  We've tried soap nuts and homemade.  Homemade worked a bit better, but he still wasn't happy with it.

  • I use them in our laundry sometimes, usually for hot loads, but I use them in our dishwasher all the time.  I've had good luck with both applications, although we found they worked the best in the dishwasher with a borax/baking soda booster (1 TBSP of each).

When I use them in the washer, I have a small cloth sack I tie them into and then just toss in the machine.  If I'm doing a cooler temp wash, then I'll borrow some of the concentrated liquid from the dishwasher stash.

This is where our co-op ordered from:
