interview-type phone call... help!

I got an email from a company I applied for a job at recently, and they want to set up a call with me to discuss more about the position... which he said should be about a 10 minute conversation. So I am at least still in consideration for the job! Which is awesome, because I can just about guarantee this one has a better salary and benefit package than my current job.

Ahhh I'm Nervous!! And Excited!! But do you think he will be doing most of the talking, or mostly asking me questions?? How does one prepare for a 10 minute phone call??

Re: interview-type phone call... help!

  • I think it will be more like a regular interview, though he did say "discuss the position" so maybe describing it to you?  At any rate, I'm sure there will be some questions for you, and you should probably have some intelligent questions about the position prepared for him. What you might want to do is to think of some key questions or phrases you like (not whole paragraphs, that sounds too rehearsed) and keep them on a piece of paper in front of you so you don't get knocked off guard.
  • I agree with Lark. I would be prepared just like I would be for a normal interview. It may be just a casual chat, but they can gauge all types of things from that initial contact.

    Best of luck!!!

  • I would still do the normal things you do to prepare for an interview, but it kind of sounds like it will be more casual. I would go over the info you have about the company and have a couple normal answers ready for interview questions. Good luck! It sounds like this is a very good thing.

  • One of the best pieces of advice I've ever been given is to dress for a phone interview like you would for a normal interview. There's something about being in "professional" clothing that gears your mindset in the proper direction more than sitting in sweats does.

  • Thanks everyone for the advice!

I just found out the call is happening in the evening (basically right after work on Weds), so at least I'll be dressed the part. I will try to brush up on the job description and make some notes of keywords and skills to talk about.

I think my biggest thing will be trying to keep myself calm so I don't talk at 1000 mph. Any children of the 80s/90s remember the Micro-Machine commercials??? I'm like that guy when I'm nervous or on too much caffiene...
