help...any computer peeps?!?
Our desktop got infected w/a virus last night somehow & now it won't do anything or open any internet-related sites. I think it prob. came from FB somehow, but I dunno. Anyway, so we need to go get another desktop I guess, our Norton Anti-virus didn't fix it or get rid of it. What's a good one to go for??? What's your fav brand??
Re: help...any computer peeps?!?
WHOA!
You don't need to go get another computer just because you have a virus!
They are totally a PITA, but there is usually something you can do to fix it.
First of all - do you have multiple logins for your computer? Like do you have one, and hubby has one? If so, are both sides infected? Sometimes this is not the case, and if one is not infected, you can usually go in under the clean side and remove the virus.
Otherwise, hard restart your computer (by pushing the button). After leaving it off for about 15-30 seconds, restart. Watch while the computer is coming back up, and it should show a button to push for "safe mode". Do this. Once in safe mode, you should have access to do a system restore from a few days ago, before this problem started. Here is a link to get you going on that http://support.microsoft.com/kb/304449. It will restore and then I would suggest running something other then your Norton - I've been using a free program called Malware Bytes that you can get off the web. It's been able to find viruses that haven't been caught by our regular AV.
Sorry, some of this is probably not going to make sense, but Google is a huge help in trying to troubleshoot this kind of thing in layman terms!
Man,if I bought a new computer every time I had a virus, I would be poor!
IF you do go that route though, I love Sony. We've had both a Sony desktop (that is still working after 10 years) and I've had two Sony laptops (only upgraded because I wanted to, not needed to).
Hope you get it sorted out!
What Jaye said is right on the money. I had the same issue a few nights ago and just restored it back to a week before.
Virus' are very tricky. Just because you have a anti-virus software does not mean you can not get them. New virus' are created everyday and it is impossible for norton, mcafee, avg, or whoever the software company is to keep up with them. Usually, once the virus is out and systems are already infected the software company will create a fix for it.
Norton and Mcafee are both very reliable anti-virus software, and Spybot or Ad-aware are recommended for spyware.

SO glad you were able to get it up and running again!
Tell you H sorry
It's never a good idea to be pressured into buying something though. Now you have the time to research, and play your cards right to get the very best deal you can! Especially with Black Friday coming up in a few months! Think about the awesome deals you'll be able to get if you can plan for computer shopping then!
Oooo, thanks for reminding me! I'll have to remember to start stalking the ads as soon as they come out.
This is exactly what I had to do when I got a virus last month. And I found out that I could still use Firefox but the virus would not let me do anything with Internet Explorer. I googled the name of the program that the virus was trying to get me to download and I found easy to follow instructions for how to get rid of it. Through that I downloaded the Malware Bytes program too. It got rid of it and I didn't have to bring it in anywhere and pay for someone to fix it.
Thanks for the info. That sounds exactly like what ours was. It was pretty easy to fix then, but I'm not any good w/that kind of thing.
