Adopted a dog!

It's been crazy so I haven't been here as much as I would really like. Anyway..I would like to give an update of sorts on a HUGE decision DH and I made last saturday! We adopted a dog! I know I posted on TK a few weeks back about this.

His name is Colt, and he is a yellow lab mix. He is 11 months old and such a sweet boy!  The first 4 days with him were very very difficult. He hid in a corner in the kitchen for days. It was so depressing. He was just sooo petrified of us and everything. He has been with us now for a little over a week, things are starting to get better but he is still very scared of loud noises. It has been an emotional roller coaster ride not only for Colt, but for us as well. We are trying to be as loving and supportive as we can to this little guy. We are so glad that we were able to give him a nice place to call home.

here are some pics!

Re: Adopted a dog!

  • Don't give up on him!  We got Lucas back in November of 2009 and he was the exact same as Colt.  Exactly.

But we kept loving him and were patient with him because we knew he wouldn't change over night.  He didn't want to be around us and wasn't sure whether we were trust worthy.  He was scared when I picked him up.

Then one day in early summer, I decided to stick him up in the recliner with me and to my surprise, he laid down.  Then he rested his head in my lap, and then fell asleep.  I don't think I've ever cried so hard.  It was such a blessing that this little dog who had been abused all his life finally trusted me.

  • Aw, don't give up!  Even though it's tough right now, he is probably just very overwhelmed.  I know that Zeke, our rescue puppy, went through a lot in his short life, and some things still really freak him out.  Cars, for instance, since he was hit by one.  Also, loud noises and just about any sudden movements.  We're pretty positive he was abused before he was taken to the rescue, but just think of how Colt must be feeling.  Just give him all of the love and support that you know he deserves, and eventually he'll warm up to you.  We've had Zeke for about 3 weeks now, and we're still learning new things about him.  It's tough adopting a dog with a past, but you've given him something that he has wanted, but never had, and I'm sure he's very grateful to you in his own way.  Just keep trying, and he'll get used to you guys!

P.S. He's adorable, by the way!

  • Colt is gorgeous. Congratulations!  Puppies with history like Colt, need their own space, most of all.  If he knows that there is a spot he can run into when he is scared, he will feel safe. If he likes the corner in the kitchen, put his blanket or bed there.  I think you are doing great so far, just waiting for him to warm up.  He will finally forget whatever bad stuff happened to him and will be just a fun happy puppy :)

BTW, I saw your wedding pictures. You looked so amazing in our dress :)  I had someone from September board on TK comment how pretty this dress was :)  So happy to finally see you on the nest as well!

  • What a cutie! Good luck with the acclimation process.

  • He's adorable! Congrats. :)

We just got a dog too. Seems like many of us are. Ours (her name is Enli) is a sweetheart sometimes but she gets riled up so easily and then she's a terror. She's only eight months old, though, so I'm looking forward to her growing out of her teenage puppy phase.

I'm excited to keep up with all the other pet parents.

  • Yay!!  Congratulations!!!!!   Keep up with him, he'll come around quick.  My MIL rescued 2 dogs that were both abused.  They were so scared of everything, but they have both done a 180!  Instead of hiding when DH & I come over they run out to see us!!!
  • Awwww! We adopted a dog too! :) She's about 2 years old and housebroken, which is great! She'll still need some obedience training though :)
