How many are needed?

Right now we have our wedding set(china and everyday) as well as all the plates and cups we both had before we were married.  I'm looking to downsize them.  How many do you have?  I'm thing to get rid of everything we had before we were married but that scares me.  Do you think a set of 8 for everyday is sufficient?  What about pot and pans?  TIA!

Re: How many are needed?

  • We have a set of 14 everyday dishes and I wouldn't want any less.  I also have a set of 13 china that I have never used all at once, but I'm okay with that.  I also have 36 plates and silverware for 36 for parties.  Love this!  It's so nice to have a real plate at parties.
  • Hi!  I entertain a lot... and have service for 16 in both everyday and formal china/crystal/flatware.  (I entertain a lot and DH has a big family).  I actually used all 16 settings of formal china for Thanksgiving twice already.

Have already broken 1 or 2 pieces of everyday... and had to buy more everyday wine and water glasses from wherever.  I did donate a lot of "singleton" randon wine and beer glasses because we had way too many of them!  (We both got married later in life and had lots of accumulated stuff).  I would keep your pots and pans for a while too... my toddlers like to play with them.

  • We currently don't have any formal china, but if we get it, it will be a set of 12.

We have 12 everyday plates/small plates/small bowls/large bowls/coffee mugs. We have a couple holiday pieces and some "seasonal" dishes. We don't have much in terms of pots and pans -- three sauce pots, a wok, one big stock pot, two frying pans, and a stove-top grill pan. But then, we have a microscopic kitchen and barely all of that fits...

  • I entertain often and have 16 for my everyday.  I find myself pulling them all out for parties at least once a month.  I have two sets of china in 12 each and rarely use them.

I did get rid of nearly everything from before we were married.  DH brought junk and my stuff was tired hand-me-downs.  My kitchen is extremely streamlined - just 3 All-Clad pots, 4 Wusthof knives, a few spatulas and wooden spoons, a couple specialty tools and a few baking sheets of various kinds.  Kitchen clutter will send me over the edge faster than almost anything else, if you couldn't tell lol

  • Don't be afraid, cleaning out old unusable stuff is therapeutic! :-)

As far as service, I have china and everyday in 12, and now I'm wishing I had them in greater quantities, because I entertain a lot.  I wish I had 18, just no storage!  I have Schott Zwiesel stemware that I use for both everyday and formal; not really into crystal.  Besides, they're versatile, same with my flatware.

I also have martini glasses for 10, pilsner glasses for 6, and hoegaarten glasses for 6 (DH's fav beer)

Pots and pans....I have all All-Clad s/s, and I have:

    3 different fry pans, 8, 10, and 12 inch
    2 stock pots, 4qt and 7qt
    2 saucepans, 1.5qt and a 2qt
    1 panini press
    1 nonstick frittata pan

I use them ALL, seriously, but especially the 4qt stockpot, the 2qt saucepan, and the three fry pans, if you want to go minimal.

If any of your old cookware looks poorly, especially if there are flaky spots to your nonstick, I'd get rid of it.  You can make do with what you have left, and then assess what you need to replace after you've been working with whatever is left.

But you may enjoy the extra space in your cupboards!
