After a wonderful phone interview last week, I've just been scheduled for a three hour in-person interview. Is this common?
I've received an itinerary for the day, so I know I won't be meeting with the same person/people the entire time, but I'm kind of taken aback by how long it is. Does anyone have experience with anything like this? The position is in higher education, if that matters at all.

Re: 3 hour interview?
Sure; I've gone on all day interviews and all morning interviews. They seem to be somewhat common.
Bring water and a toothbrush and toothpaste and mouthwash. YOur mouth gets dry and stale talking to people when you're spending a chunk of time at an interview.:)
I always ask each person the same question -- see if everyone is on the same song sheet.
In my experience, it's extremely standard for a first round of in person interviews to meet 2- 4 people, for 45 min to an hour each. So, yes, this sounds pretty typical.
What has been your experience in the past that makes you question this one? What kind of roles have you interviewed for?
Thanks for the tips! Tarpon, I would've never thought about mouthwash or a toothbrush.
Chrissy, thanks for the kind words! I'm not in finance, but I guess this is the norm in other fields as well.
Most recently, I had two in person interviews with the same organization that lasted 30 minutes to an hour. Prior to that, I hadn't been on an interview in 5 years - and at that time I was entry-level. I guess I'm just out of touch!
Thanks again!

I was thinking the same thing. It's much less nerve-wracking knowing what I'll be doing at each hour/half hour.
Thanks!

For my current position, I had a full day interview. It started the evening before with dinner with the VP and Dean, then the next day with a round robin with different departments.
He's my fairytale, a dream when I'm not sleeping.
<a href="http://s279.photobucket.com/albums/kk121/behapybride/?action=viewMy last interview also had an itinerary, and I met with six different people. It took about three hours as well. It's definitely a ton of talking and smiling!
For me, it was a second interview, but every place does it differently. I currently work in higher ed, and for this job, my second interview was with three people. So it seems fairly common, especially for positions that are above entry-level.
Prepare to answer some questions repeatedly. In that last interview with six people, I was asked by several "Why are you looking to leave your job" or "What is your experience in ___" and had to just grin and repeat. The interviews were scheduled back to back so they didn't have time to confer and share answers, so I could understand why some of the same questions were asked.
It is very tiring; take some time to relax once you're done! I went home and watched Oprah and didn't talk until my husband got home hours later.
Good luck!
Yes, I am also in higher education and it is very very common for interviews to last a minimum of 3 hours if not the entire day. Usually you will speak with various people at the University and/or department, sometimes there is a brief tour as well.
Good luck!!!
Thanks so much for all the insight! It's very uplifting to read that so many people found their current position after an interview of this length. I would love to be able to say the same after tomorrow! This is an amazing position at a fantastic organization; I hope I do well.
