Inquiring about a position w/ current employer...need advice

There will be a position opening up at DH's office. Its a management position which is what he is trying to move towards. It was just announced yesterday that the company will be looking to fill the position. The employee that previously held the position has been out due to cancer and will not be returning. So when should he inquire about it? Should he wait a week or so since it was just announced that they previous employee won't be returning because of his health?

  • Why would he wait? I'd strike while the iron is hot. I don't see why the reason for the vacancy would give him pause. Yes, it's sad that his CW is battling cancer, but that's a separate issue from "this position is now open".

I wouldn't wait. I know it is a sensitive subject, but at the same time, they will need to find someone quickly to fill the role.

He could phrase it as "I am sorry to hear the announcement about *Bob* not returning due to his illness. Now that you are looking to the fill the position, I'd like to express my interest in applying. I would be an excellent candidate, as I already know a lot about the position and the company, and could adapt quickly to fill the role in this transitional time." ...or something.

  • I wouldn't wait - other internal candidates won't.

  • There's really no need to wait.  I don't think he's being insensitive if that's the concern.
