I posted this on my local board, but I'd like to get your thoughts, too. Do your teams/other colleges do this, too? For some reason or another, this whole thing really intrigues me.
I guess this is the big "debate" going on. I think it's easy to turn it into an OU vs. OSU debate. Simply because this is a huge thing in Norman where the majority of the crowd shouts 'SOONERS!" at the end of the National Anthem, whereas in Stillwater, very few people shout "COWBOYS!".
Basically, the jist is this: the debate is the shouting of 'SOONERS!" at the end of the NA. OU is playing Air Force this weekend and people are finally starting to come out and say this has to/needs to change. Especially given their opponent for this weekend. What do you think? Does it matter? Is it disrespectful?
Listen to this before you state your opinion - it's only a few seconds long: http://podcasting.fia.net/6779/4476604.mp3
My thoughts: it's just plain disrespectful. It's always really bothered me. It even bothers me when/if I hear "COWBOYS!". I don't like it and I think people need to be more respectful to those who are in the forces, those who are overseas, those who have lost their lives, and all those in the past who served. I don't like it at all.
Re: Debatable or not? (My post from my local.)
I agree with you. The NA is what should bring us all together, and screaming your teams name at the end is just ridiculoous as it ruins the moment. Whether you're playing the Air Force or not, it's uncalled for.
That needs to change because it is disrespectful, as is booing. I hate booing. I always am so embarrassed when I'm at a game and our fans start booing the other team. I can understand booing at a bad call, but if people boo when the other team comes on the field or if their band comes on to play... come on, people, that's just classless.
The booing when the other teams comes onto the field makes me crazy, too. Does sportsmanship not mean anything to anyone these days?
I agree that it is disrespectful, regardless who a team is playing. However, I don't see it stopping anytime soon. It is a long time tradition and many many teams do it. Kansas City Chiefs fan yell 'Chiefs' at just about any sporting event they attend...even if the Chiefs aren't playing.
I guess I just don't see how the tradition could be stopped, ya know?
In an American history class in college, our professor told us that it actually used to be disrespectful to clap at the end of the NA. I had never heard that before and never really followed up on it. I am curious if that is true. (Random thought that popped in my head, sorry)
And I also HATE when people boo the other team or band when they come on the field. And I hate it even more when it's a nobody team...i.e. we played McNeese State this weekend. We had tons of fans that boo'ed when they came on the field. They are a little school, nobody in our area had really heard of them, why boo??? If it's Kansas, maybe...still disrespectful, but we have a rivalry like crazy.
Also, I don't hate booing. I boo. A lot. Sometimes at my own team. It's part of the game. I don't, however, boo when someone is hurt, no matter what team they're on. That's the line that I won't cross, and I cheer when they walk off the field.
I don't think booing on a college/pro level is a big deal.
I think it's disrespectful. It's changing up the lyrics to a song that is meant to honor this country's freedom and those who have fought/died for it. It hits a sore spot with me - but I also realize that OU isn't the only team that does it, and it's easier to ignore it than fight it. I don't think it'll end anytime soon anyway, even though the school's urged fans to stop saying it.
I'm not a fan of booing, either - but hey, it happens. I'll sure as heck boo the refs though. I do that a lot.
There used to be an ooooold joke about it: What is the last line of the National Anthem? Answer: Play Ball! I think it was a Johnny Carson joke or Bob Hope maybe?
I don't find it disrespectful. I think it's kinda odd to play the National Anthem at sporting events in general. What exactly does an OU/OSU game have to do with our country, patriotism or national heritage? I get playing anthems at Olympic events - you are representing your country in those competitions and playing the anthem is part of representing your country and your culture. But at an NFL Patiots/Jets game, not so much.
So they are playing Air Force. It is still an NCAA football game, not a memorial service or a parade or a dedication ceremony. A football game. When they play the Anthem, I take off my hat, put my hand to my heart and sing along. I won't care what people shout at the end. Though some might suggest my singing is unpatriotic...
I'm not a fan of booing either.
Also I've noticed that the end of the NA chanting happens in more than just football.
I think it's disrespectful of a song that honors our country.

Granted, I haven't listened to the recording, but is it really "changing up the lyrics," or is it just shouting the team name at the end of the NA? Assuming it's the latter, I really don't see the big deal. (Then again, I have been known to boo when the UGA / TN / FSU team storms the field.
I don't boo at the bands, though, nor would I ever cheer when an opposing player is injured.)
They're actually saying "And the home of the SOONERS!" instead of "And the home of the brave." If they were shouting Sooners after the NA was completely finished, totally wouldn't be an issue. Substituting a word, to me, is changing up the lyrics. Buuuuut...that's just me. I've had issue with this for awhile, so sorry if I come off as b!tchy.
I think people just got up in arms because AF is going to Norman. I don't like it, but it's something that they do - and it really didn't come under fire until this whole OU/AF game was set up. I wouldn't ever do it, but if it's not that big of a deal to other people, I wouldn't say anything about it at like, a game. It's been interesting to see it argued from both sides of the fence.
This is not exactly true. This is an issue at this same time every.year although I will agree it has become a bigger issue this year because the Sooners were playing the Air Force. We honored several Air Force members by having them sit with us in our suite and guess what? They also screamed "SOONERS" at the end of the National Anthem. This is a tradition that has been going on for a very long time and it is going to take a long time to convince 85,000 to stop screaming "sooners." Despite screaming Sooners at the end of the anthem during the game, I felt like OU was extremely accomodating to the Air Force and displayed sportsmanship I was actually proud of for once!
I don't have a problem with the insertion of the teams name, but that probably stems from being a Braves fan, which is really easy to sneak in there
