Reusable menstrual products

I see that there is already a post about the Diva cup which answers my questions about that.

I want to try this product and thought about getting some reusable pads and liners for backup at first and on heavier days or when bathroom access will be limited. Does anyone use these? Which brand or type would you recommend? Do they leak easily?  Are they easy to clean? Where do you buy yours? TIA :)

Re: Reusable menstrual products

  • I have a cloth pad that I use for night time use later in my cycle.  I can't sleep with the DivaCup in so I usually wear tampons at night so after the heavy days I just wear a Mama Cloth.  I've never had a leak problem, but then again I don't wear them until my flow is so light is barely does anything at night.

My pas is from Gentle Cycle Pads.  That links to her blog, not sure where her store is.

  • I had some cloth pads. I think they were flannel. I hated them. They were uncomfortable, and I just hated dealing with them.

So I guess my advice: make sure they're not just flannel/cotton. Those ones suck.

Which is interesting, because that's what I prefer.  I actually don't have an official product.  I just cut strips of flannel from old pajama legs, folded them (4 layers thick for light days, 6 for heavier/night) and the cut a scrap of fleece to go underneath.  I only wear them when I'm at home, but love how much better my body feels with this than synthetic products.

  • Oh, and for cleaning, I have a covered plastic bucket that I fill with water and let them soak.  I dump that water into the toilet when I flush it next.  Then I just put my pads into the hot or warm load with underwear, towels, sheets...whatever else you'd wash at that temp.

If I had sewn pads I'd probably hang them up to dry rather than doing the dryer.

  • My favorite ones so far are Happy Heinies, but I've been using them for 3+ years and the inner PUL lining twists in the laundry.  Overall, it's not a huge issue, just a minor annoyance.  I'd definitely say it's less of an annoyance than 'wings' of a disposable pad sticking together or sticking to my leg.

What I like about the HH are that they're very thin.  I have some organic cotton ones that do the job, but they're very thick, so I don't like to use those when I intend to be running around a lot.  I just ordered some new ones on Etsy and am excited to try them out.

I just wash mine with the rest of my whites.  Hot water, normal detergent, line dry when possible, never use fabric softener or dryer sheets on them.  My fleece ones come really clean, the cotton stains fairly easily.

ETA: I've never experienced any leaks.  I use a Lunette cup on my heavy days with the cloth pad as backup.  I rarely need the backup, but even with disposable products, my flow is so heavy I'm nervous to go without the added layer of protection.
