I remember you were cloth-diapering... How is it going?!

I've been going back and forth, and right now I'm leaning towards g Diapers, but I figured you might be able to offer me some real-life mommy advice!

  • I would also love to hear your thoughts....and also if you can tell me about the cleaning process involved.  Thanks!
  • As far as cleaning, I found this company Changing Habits that is only $18/week and they pick up all the dirty diapers and drop off clean ones every week! If we decide to go the cloth diaper route, that's probably something we'll do!

But that's as far as I've gotten in my planning haha

  • Hey girls! Sorry I didn't see this earlier, I've had a busy couple of days :-)

The CDing is going great. We started when Jamie was 3 days old and haven't looked back. There is definitely a learning curve, so if you want to start right away definitely have a package of newborn disposables for backup. But we have only used 1 1/2 packages all this time. By this point I only have to use them if I am behind on laundry. He hasn't worn one in a couple of weeks.

We used primarily pockets for the newborn size, but we are now transitioning to the bigger diapers and are using the GroVia AI2s. They are shells with a snap in insert. The inserts are organic cotton. All of the inserts for our NB sized diapers were microfiber. The organic cotton is SO MUCH better than the microfiber! If he was in them too long he would leak. Forget about overnight. With the organic cotton he can go all night and be dry. And he can wear one outfit all day! (unless he spits up, but that's another story haha).

As far as washing, it's super easy. Basically you just add a cold rinse before and after a normal hot wash. The first cold rinse is to rinse the poop off (no soap). Then you do a hot wash/cold rinse with soap. Then an additional cold rinse to make sure all of the soap gets rinsed out. If you exclusively BF, you don't have to rinse the poop off because it's water soluble. If you FF, you have to rinse the poop off first. And once they are into solids you have to dump off the chunks.

Personally I have been doing diaper laundry every 2-3 days from the start. We started out with 19 diapers for our NB stash. Now that we are between sizes (still using some NB but also into the bigger ones) I could go longer than that without running out but I would rather not.

To each their own, but I would recommend doing them yourself over using a service. My reasons for that are a) they only pick up once a week (I wouldn't want the dirty diapers sitting around that long waiting) and b) it's cheaper to do it yourself. Plus it looks like that service you linked provides the diapers, so you have to go the prefold route. Which there is nothing wrong with, but that wouldn't work for us, and it sounds like you aren't interested in them either.

A small list of things you need in addition to the diapers - pail liners (I have 2 - whenever one load is being washed, the other is in the pail, and the dirty one goes right into the washer with the diapers). CD safe diaper cream (we use CA Baby). Wet bags (for when you go out) - we have two small ones and a large one.

If you do cloth wipes too, I love these ones that we got. I can clean 95% of poopy diapers with one wipe, it's awesome. We have 42 wipes and never run out before the laundry is done again. In addition to that you need a spray bottle of some sort to wet the wipes (although in a pinch they work fine dry too). We just use plain water.

Okay this has turned into a NOVEL! I'm going to leave it at that for now and if I think of anything else I'll let you girls know. As far as the different kinds of CDs out there - the place I learned the most about them was at a CD workshop at MOCO. I highly recommend it.

  • Whoa, thanks!

It sounds like it's totally working out for you!

I asked on the Nov and CD boards on the Bump also, and the CD ladies told me you can use prefolds in the g diaper instead of g diaper brand liners, which is what I would do if I used the service. It's really the cleaning part that is holding me back.

I love the look of g diapers, but the CD board raves about grovia and thirsties, so I think I should broaden my search!

Thanks SO much for all the info!! I've been really flip-flopping because it just seems so overwhelming and there is so much information and it's so confusing to try to figure out! But I should look into that class because maybe it'll make me feel better about it!

Oh that makes so much more sense! I didn't realize you could do that because I was never interested in the g diapers, so I don't really know much about them.

If you are unsure because it seems overwhelming, definitely do the class. It's only $15 for a couple, and it is SO informative. I was crazy overwhelmed with all of the info out there on the interwebs, but after the class I felt so much better about it all. I was still confused about washing, so when it came time to wash them all before Jamie was born I called MOCO and they helped me out a ton. They said you can call any time to ask questions.
