Anyone have a suggestion for a good book to read to "learn" football? DH is obsessed during football season, and I want to understand it more so he has someone to watch games with. I understand the basics (downs, most of the positions, etc). but there is a lot I don't know.
Suggestions of books?

Re: Learning football
Check out the website Football Outsiders. Don't be alarmed by some of their advance math discussions (unless you are a math geek, then you might find your answers faster). But I like their articles. They explain things clearly and often include diagrams of types of plays. They also have an open game discussion board that you could read to get some more information in real time during a game.
You could also read Tuesday Morning Quarterback (TMQ) on espn.com. His articles appear on Tuesdays (imagine that!) and are very informative, tho he does love to run into side tangents on space travel and christmas decorations.
What a good wife you are!
PPs suggestions are excellent, especially just sitting down and watching games while having someone explain what's going on.
There is a Football for Dummies book if you need a guide.
It won't really help with the basics (plays, the business side of the NFL, etc) but really helped me get a greater understanding was learning about the human side of the game - the players, about their charitable work, socio-economic aspects of their lifestyle (and where they came from). ESPN the Magazine has good articles (I find them better than Sports Illustrated).
I've found that I've got a much deeper appreciation of sports when learn about the players.
Is there any chance you could record a game and then re-watch (so he doesn't miss it live) slowly and he can explain things as you go?
I agree with the suggestions to just watch the games. The more you get into it, the more you learn.
I also like ESPN magazine and Hard Knocks (HBO) tv series. Following specific teams also will help you learn more because you get the whole picture - everything from the week leading up to the game to a follow-up on what happened during the game, details on the players, etc.
Maybe your DH can help you learn Football instead of buying a book. That's what I did. When we watch games together, I will ask DH a question if I don't know something and he would explain it to me. It didn't seem to bother him so you should give it a try.
Your husband would probably love it if you would ask him some questions during the game (like during a commercial, when he can rewind and reshow you, not grabbing his face away from the big play).
That way, he gets to be the expert, and it shows him that you're willing to try to care about something he loves.
Haven't read it, but have thought about it. Not only is my DH obsessed with NFL and college ball, he coaches varsity high school. It's part of our lives much more than just the season. I've been doing this 4+ years and I still don't get it all.
