Local Petting Zoos?

Anyone know of any in the Twin Cities Metro area?

Re: Local Petting Zoos?

  • No to petting zoo's, most do not treat the animals humanely.  Unfortunately, I've seen a lot of the "ride the pony" (completely disgust me when they're hooked up to the wheel) options at local apple orchards.  Both sets of grandparents have already been instructed that this is a big no-no when LO is old enough to do any of these activities, along with the circus - don't even get me going on that.

    Stepping off soapbox.......

  • There is an apple orchard in Delano called Fall Harvest Orchard.  Not a true petting zoo but rather a farm setting where kids have access to goats, sheeps, calves, chicken etc.  It is free though they have a donation box.  You can purchase apples, pumpkins etc.  We love it and generally take our DS there a few times each fall.

This is more what I am thinking- a farm environment where you can check out the animals.  Not a circus.

  • Dodge Nature Center has a model farm... I don't think you can pet the animals, but they have opportunities for kids to view them (as well as lots of other family-friendly activities.  Here's a link to their page on "meeting the animals":

They're located in the West St. Paul/Mendota Heights area.

  • Fonderosa Park in St. Croix Falls, WI. Its on Hwy 8 (on the north side) just east of St. Croix Falls. Its a petting zoo and feeding farm. I wasn't able to find a website for it. But its open everyday.
