How are you, how is your grandma doing?

Re: Carmen

  • hey thanks for asking...

When I got there on Tuesday after work she was talking but not really. They had a IV in her with sodium and potassium. And they were dripping it in very fast. We left to go get something to eat and came back about a hour and half later and she was more alert than when we left bc she was getting the sodium and potassium. My mom stayed with her that night bc my grandmother did not want my dad there...she is shy and if she had to go to the bathroom she would not go in front of him. About 2:30 she had a seizure. It was not a bad seizure but it was from her sodium being so low. Normal sodium level is 135-145 and when she checked in it was 109.

Wednesday she was sore and tired from the seizure the doctor told us that was normal and he expected that. She did not eat anything maybe a bite or two of her supper. She was very weak (of course). My dad stayed with her last night.

This morning the doctor came by already and told her she had to start eating her sodium level was back at a good place but she had to build her strength back up. They are suppose to be sending a dietian by today to get her to eat and possibly give her a appetiate stimulate. If she still does not want to eat then the doctor said worse case he will give her a iv that has multi vitiamins in it but it would be better if she would eat and get the vitamins and nutrients naturally.

My mom told her yesterday they were giving her until this morning to not eat and then today they were going to try to force her to atleast take one bite of everything on her plate. But right now it is a violent cycle she has not eaten in so long that when food touches her stomach she gets sick and wants to throw up but there is nothing to throw up so she dry heaves. But the doctor said once she gets some food in her then the dry heaving should stop.

It is frustrating beyond belief. We are frustrated with her bc she let herself get like this. Everytime we would say you need to go to the dr you are not eating she would say she was going to call or if I dont eat tomorrow I will call. She never called and we had no idea if she was eating or not. When we visited she did not eat but when we asked she would say yeah i ate something today. Then we are frustrated with her doctor she was seeing a nurse practioner and they were friends and worked together before well she saw her last week and obviously she was weak and confused and instead of putting her in the hospital then she let her go home. Then we are frustrated with ourselves that it has gotten this bad and we did not step in sooner. It is horrible.

Sorry this was so long just needed to get alot of it out.

Who let the dawgs out? image
  • I hope the seizure wasnt too serious, but still thats scary!!!  I hope she gets better, and wants to get better.  Have you guys thought about making her see a new Dr (maybe the Dr. at the hospital can suggest it?) b/c I would be furious over that alone.  Have they brought up why she is doing this to herself?

I know it has to be frustrating, hang in there!  Lots of continued T&P to you all.
