The flights were expensive. It was $1k pp just for the initial flight. Inter-island flights were about $500 total.
We prefered Kauai because it was very green and tropical. It is the oldest of the big 4 so the island has had a lot of time to rejuvinate after lava flows. It is also pretty small and easy to get around.
The Big Island was cool because it had a lot of different landscapes depending on which part of the island you were. You saw new(er) lava flow where it was just lava rock, and parts that were green, and anywhere in between. Seeing an active volcano was cool too. But the island is so big. It took 2 hours from Kona to the volcano. We didn't even make it to Hilo on the east side because it was 3 hours from Kona on the west.
I haven't been to Oahu or Maui. Oahu is very populated. It has beautiful beaches, high end shopping, and Pearl Harbor. If you're more of a sit on the beach type of vacationer than Oahu may be for you. We like to be actively doing things (just sightseeing can get boring for us).
Maui seems to have a little of everything. It is starting to get more populated. But you can do a lot of the activities we did on Kauai and BI in Maui too. Plus they have some nice white sand beaches and some black sand ones (we went to one on the BI).
It really just depends on what you want to go and the type of vacation you want to have. But overall, it's Hawaii and it's beautiful!
