re-canning something already canned?

random question I know but I am all new to this canning thing, but it is going well! so I made raspberry jam, delish! but I put all of it in one pint jar! it is nice and sealed but once opened will take forever for me to eat. is it possible to open the jar, scoop all the jam into tiny-er jars and then re-boil to seal?! would I need to reheat the jam first? is this even possible, or will it completely spoil it and put it at risk? thanks for your advice!!!

Re: re-canning something already canned?

  • I believe....you have to re boil it and then re-can it.

I typically follow the directions @ Pick your own

Here's her recipe for rasberry jam

    http://pickyourown.org/raspberryjam.htm

"Some people replace the lid and reprocess the jar, then that's a bit iffy. If you heat the contents back up, re-jar them (with a new lid) and the full time in the canner, it's usually ok."

So I'd say if you completely re-can it it "should" be ok...I'm no expert tho this is my first year of canning and I've only pickled, salsa, and tomato sauce.  I've never done jam.

  • I don't know the answer, but i do want to recommend that you sterilize the spoon you use to scoop it out with, in addition to the new jar, etc.

  • You would need to reheat it and then recan.  However the smallest jars for safe canning that I can find are half pint jam jars.  Not sure if it's really worth the work since they aren't that much smaller, jam will last awhile in the fridge.

  • You would have to reheat and re-can, which should be safe, but might hurt the flavor/texture.

Once opened it should stay good in the fridge indefinitely as long as it's got enough sugar and you don't get any bread bits or anything foreign in there.
