Flu Shot?

Do you guys get your flu shot each year? Are you getting one this year?

I always did when I was in college and while I worked at my previous job since it was convenient and free. Since then, I haven't been getting them. My mom is really urging me to do it since I will be traveling. DH doesn't think it's a good idea.

Re: Flu Shot?

  • Why doesn't your husband think it's a good idea?

I have to get a flu shot every year because I am in the high risk category. I've had the flu before and it was horrible. That taught me a lesson for sure.

  • I get a flu shot every year and have never had any side effects or gotten the flu.  I used to teach, so I was around kids and their germs.  Now I'm in close quarters with adults and their germs!!! Plus, my mom takes humira, which decreases immune system effectiveness, so her doc rec'd that all of us continue to get one to lesson the chance we pass something on to her.

This year, I am going to try and get just the regular flu shot, not the combo one with swine flu.  My friend that is a pharmacist recommended waiting until late Oct/early Nov to get it b/c if you get it earlier, it might not be as effective in the spring.  I'll probably wait til then.

I would def get it if you'll be doing lots of plane travel.  Is there a particular reason that DH doesn't want you to get it?

  • I'm considering getting it, too.  I haven't gotten in in years past because I got the Flu MIST when I was in college and I'd never had the flu that bad in my life.  Well, except for last year when I DID get the swine flu (which really wasn't as bad as everyone made it out to be).  If you're going to be traveling, I highly recommend it.  Any reason DH doesn't think it's a good idea?  Ever had a bad reaction from it?
  • Yes, we get them for free at work. I had the Flu once, never again.

  • DH and I get ours for free from work too.

I had the flu so bad when I was ~9 that it dehydrated me and I remember having to go to the hospital for fluids. Loads of fun times.

  • I don't.  I never have (even when I used to work in health care).
  • I'm leaning towards getting one. DH said quite a few people at his work had bad reactions to them last year and he is afraid I might get sick. My coworker's mom is a nurse and she said she doesn't think anyone should get them unless they fall into the higher risk category. Hmm... I don't know.
  • I just went to a conference (health care) and one of the main topics was the flu shot. Fun times!

We are "strongly encouraged" to obtain our free flu shots here at work, but eh, I usually don't.

  • I always get them, usually around mid. Oct. I've been told that the government agency I contract for will come to our office and give them to us for free. Guess I'll be going to the office that day.
  • I've never taken a flu shot (and don't plan to) and I've never had the flu.

Ditto this. And hopefully I am not jinxing myself.

  • I've never gotten one either, and I've also never had the traditional flu but I did have swine flu last fall before the vaccinations were really available. It was bad for me though, I had respiratory problems for a month.
  • Hey! I'm Jessica and a newbie!

Its was mandatory at work last year, not sure about this year but they're baiting us with a chance to win a free cruise....

  • I normally don't, but I might this year just so I won't have to worry about accidentally giving it to my dad.
  • I've never had one, even though I teach middle school.  I rarely get sick, and I guess I've just dodged a bullet on that one.  I have friends who work in flu at CDC and highly recommend getting the shot.
