college professor?

What are the prerequisites to becoming an assistant professor?  Could someone with an MBA become a professor or would he/she need a PhD or teaching experience?

Re: college professor?

  •

    ( coming out of lurking)

My FI is a college professor/ college administrator, he is the youngest in his department by 15 years at least. He has a Phd, he taught classes in grad school and through his doctoral program.

I know you can teach adjunct at a community college with a masters or YEARS in a specific field.

  • It depends. At most schools in my field, you have to have a PhD. I have seen community college professors or adjuncts with MBAs or MFAs, but a lot of places seem to require you to complete your PhD before you're tenure/promotable.

Business might be different, but the problem often is that there are more graduates than jobs (because, let's face it, the tenure track job is the holy grail of academia) so in order for me to agree to hire someone with a master's over someone with a PhD, there would have to be something incredible about their work experience. For example, we just hired a high level former governmental official who has a JD  over someone with a PhD in his speciality (not law) because his former job was so awesome and he has over 20 years experience.

  • You may be able to get into teaching at a smaller liberal arts college or community college. At the university I am at, most of the professors in the College of Business have their DBA or PhD, I know there is one that is in the process of completing it. I believe that in order to teach adjunct or at most community colleges, you need a masters degree with at least 15 post graduate hours in the area which you are teaching. HTH.

He's my fairytale, a dream when I'm not sleeping.

  • Thanks for the replies.  I'm actually not asking for myself, but for my 63 year old father.  He got his mba back in 1982 and has owned and run two businesses since then.  However, now that he's retired, he was considering teaching.  I was wondering if teaching at a community college was feasible.

  • Becoming an adjunct at a community college or even a 4 year school (that is, teaching a couple of classes a semester) is definitely possible. Becoming a full time, tenure track assistant professor is probably not.
