Partial sun fall plants

I was hoping to put something in along my sidewalk leading to my door, which gets all morning sun up until about right now (12:30pm). There's some perennial plant in there now but I don't know what it is and it was just ravaged by the summer heat.

Do you all think ornamental kale would do all right? I was also going to plant daffodil bulbs for the spring that will bloom before the other plant comes in. I'm sure pansies would do great but they are going to fill a lot of my big planter that runs on the other side. I already have mums in there, as well.

I'm experimenting with fall plants. This will be our second fall here in this house (wow, already?!?) and I want to do a better job this time around. Pansies do great but I know there are other plants to work with. I'm in Zone 7.

Re: Partial sun fall plants

  • Are you wanting annuals only or perennials?

Ornamental kale will probably work fine, but that's an annual.  Perennials that bloom/have interest in the fall include: Toad lilies, heurchera (coral bells), Japanese anemones, hellebores (they are evergreen) and native aster (you may get enough sun for it).

  • Hmm, I'll have to see if I can find some of those. I don't mind having annuals in the fall since the summer plant is perennial, though. Thanks!

  • Perennials are just easier and cheaper in the long run.  But finding perennial shade plants that bloom in the fall can be difficult.  Instead plants with interesting foliage work well to keep the space looking nice (like the hellebores the pp mentioned).

But here's a list of late summer to fall blooming shade plants I have with a few I hope to have:

Aster, White Woodland is native and can tolerate part shade

Astilbe, different varieties bloom throughout summer and early fall, very showy

Bellflowe/Balloon Flower, can handle part shade

Hardy Begonia, mine is still going strong

Coral Bells, bloom in the summer and have very vibrant foliage

Corydalis, is the longest blooming shade plant in at least my area (Zn 4)

    Autumn Crocus

Hostas, if you do your research you can find many varieties that bloom late in the year and also have nice foliage to look at the rest of the year

Meadow Rue, the 'Lavender Mist' variety is fall blooming

    Obedient Plant

Toad lily, love these!  Very showy for a fall shade plant, mine still has some blooms.

    Pink Turtlehead

For non-blooming ferns would be great.  My Lady, Sensitive, Christmas, and Autumn ferns still look great.  Plus Autumn ferns turn shades of yellow and red in the fall.

    HTH!
  • I'm a huge fan of Autumn Joy, which is a type of sedum. They say that they are sun plants, but mine grow well with just a few hours. They are blooming right now. The color will last a couple of months. They die back in the winter. In the spring, they grow back.

I'm in Seattle... if they do well here, I think they do well with any amount of sun. We've had an especially grey year.
